First Belizean oil to be exported to Texas
Ever since the first significant petroleum find was made on July thirtieth of last year, Belize has been experiencing something of an oil frenzy. Never mind that the speculation has always run far ahead of the facts, beginning with the Belize Times shouting Eureka! almost before the drilling even started. But the gap between our dreams and reality is steadily shrinking. More

Lease to Freehold Title Project to Commence
The Ministry of Natural Resources, Local Government and the Environment, through the Lands and Surveys Department will officially launch a Lease to Freehold Title Project on 23rd January 2006 in Dangriga Town. This one-year project is a national initiative, which begins with leaseholders of residential lots of one acre or less but will eventually extend to other lessees. The Lease to Freehold Title Project is part of Government’s commitment to provide land security for Belizeans. Countries unite for border fight
Diplomats from Mexico and Central America have demanded guest worker programs and the legalization of illegal migrants in the United States, while criticizing a U.S. proposal for tougher border enforcement. The countries represented at the meeting - including Mexico, Nicaragua, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Belize and Panama - created a working group to design a regional policy to avoid migrant abuse and to follow the course of the legislation. Aon's 2006 Political & Economic Risk Map Warns of Complex Political and Economic Risks, Despite Upgrades
Significant trends for 2006 Political and Economic Risk Map are:
Increased risk in Latin America. The emergence of more left-wing governments in Latin America is causing concern for foreign businesses. Companies doing business in Venezuela and Bolivia are facing higher taxes, revision of contracts and threatened expropriation of assets. In addition to Bolivia, four other Latin American countries, Belize, Costa Rica, Guatemala and Nicaragua, were downgraded on the 2006 map. More

Global warming and hurricanes part 2:
An increase in late-season activity?
Hurricane experts agree that global warming has not led to an increase in the number of tropical cyclones occurring world-wide, and are currently debating whether or not global warming has affected tropical cyclone intensity (more on this later in January, I've been pulling together a lot of material). Is global warming possibly affecting the length of hurricane season, as well? It seems that an inordinate number of late-season and off-season tropical storms have been forming in the Atlantic the past few years. For example, two December storms formed in 2003, which also had the first-ever April storm, Tropical Storm Ana. Cuba's worst hurricane ever, Hurricane Michelle, hit in November 2001, and the Atlantic's second deadliest hurricane of all time, Hurricane Mitch, lasted into November 1998. More

THOUGHT OF THE DAY
