TODAY’S FORECAST
A weak northerly flow continues over the Yucatan
Peninsula and offshore waters of Belize.
Ambergris Caye, San Pedro and Caye Caulker will
experience for the next 24 hrs:
Mostly sunny today with cloudy breaks and isolated
showers and mainly fair tonight. Midday Temperatures
will reach around upper 80 degrees F. Winds will be
light and from the northwest at first then will become
north easterly at 5 to 15 Kts after mid morning. The
sea state will be smooth to light chop.
The outlook is for mostly sunny weather and isolated
showers through late Friday.

GOB Negotiating US$25 million Loan from Venezuela
A pair of senior Ministry of Finance officials led by advisor to the Financial Secretary Joe Waight traveled to Venezuela this week to negotiate with a senior Venezuelan official, Rudolph Romer, the head of public credit. The terms or the structure of the credit have not been finalized but it will be what's considered a soft loan, loosely proposed to be at an interest rate of somewhere between 5 and 10%. More

Prison is home to almost 1300 inmates
Today marked the official end of the October Supreme Court session... And, as is customary, that body was informed regarding those defendants who had been put behind bars. Jose Ack, the head of operations at the Kolbe Foundation, took the witness stand before Justice Troadio Gonzalez, where he gave a report on the state of the prison, referred to as "jail delivery." Ack indicated to the court that at present the prison at Hattieville has a total of one thousand, two hundred and ninety-nine inmates. This includes one thousand, two hundred and sixty-eight males and thirty-one females. Of this total, three hundred and twenty-nine prisoners are on remand awaiting trial. More

Curbing Guatemala's "Culture of Violence"
Canadian police and law officials are working with their Guatemalan counterparts to improve crime investigation techniques in Latin America's most dangerous city. There are in Guatemala City, on average, 10 to 15 murders every day. It is the most dangerous city in Latin America, according to Mr. Hunt, with almost 5,000 homicides annually in a population of just 2 million, about twice the size of Canada's capital city. Though there is no comparison, Ottawa reported 10 murders in 2004, and across the country of 33 million people there was a total of 622. About 172 of those homicides were by firearm. More

Vanishing of frogs, toads tied to global warming, study says

Writing in Thursday's issue of the journal Nature, the scientists say that more than 60 closely related frog and toad species have vanished from the tropical forests of Latin America during the last few decades, partly because of warming temperatures. The team says this is the first time such a connection has been made. More

Private firms 'can help climate'
The private sector will solve the problem of climate change, according to the US Energy Secretary, Samuel Bodman. He told the Asia-Pacific Partnership on Clean Development and Climate that the job of governments was to help businesses take up clean technologies. Critics say the talks are a way to avoid signing up to binding targets like those in the Kyoto Protocol. More
