Victor
Quiroz slapped with various charges
He told police that he was a minor after he
broke into a home last
week, but that did not stop police from slapping 18-year-old Victor
Manuel Hernandez Quiroz, with a number of charges following a home
burglary. As readers may recall, Police detained a person matching the
description given, which included injuries inflicted, on an individual
who had burglarized the home of San Pedro resident, Alberto Ancona on
January 4th, 2010. While under police custody, Quiroz told police that
he was 16 years of age and as a result, his identity was withheld by
both the Police Department and some sectors of the media to protect the
minor’s identity as stipulated by the Children’s Act. But as it now
turns out to be, not only did Quiroz prove to be deceitful to the
police and the media about his particulars, but he is also responsible
for a number of other burglaries and crimes on the island and on the
same area as the Ancona residence.
![]() Five burglaries in the area point to Quiroz While under custody, Police investigation
linked Quiroz to the
aggravated burglary of the residences of Michaela Chub, Florita
Frisinger, Linda Stevens, plus the burglary of Saga’s office and Ali
Baba Restaurant, all committed in December 2009. As a
result
Quiroz was charged for two counts of aggravated burglary, one count of
grievous harm and four separate counts of burglary. According to police
more than half of the properties stolen during the long list of
burglaries were recovered. When he appeared in court, Quiroz wasted no
time in pleading guilty to all charges. Hence, Quiroz was sentenced to
seven years for aggravated burglary and two years for grievous harm for
the case involving the assault and burglary of the Ancona’s resident.
Additionally, he was also sentence to five years for each of the other
cases. Quiroz is a born Belizean but was raised in Honduras and had
recently arrived in San Pedro where he lived in the San Pedrito Area.

San Pedro Sun BELIZEAN ORGANIZATIONS MAKE PLEA
FOR ASSISTANCE FOR HAITI
International assistance has begun to pour
into Haiti, after a
seven-point-zero magnitude earthquake virtually flatted the capital,
Port-au-Prince on Tuesday afternoon. The national effort from Belize is
being spearheaded by the Belize Red Cross which announced the launch of
an appeal yesterday. This morning, Scotia Bank Belize announced that it
too has joined in the disaster relief effort. Josie Andrews is the
bank’s Marketing Manager.
Josie Andrews; Marketing Manager, Scotiabank "Scotiabank is an international bank and our head office has made a corporate donation of $250 thousand Canadian dollars towards the Canadian Red Cross Haiti earthquake relief fund. Similarly, if you are in Belize we opened up an account for our staff to make contributions so we can pass it on to our counterparts in Haiti to both Scotiabank employees and their families that have been devastated. At the same time we do have along with the Belize Red Cross has their own account here at Scotiabank where we are encouraging our customers and the Belizean public to come into any of our eleven branches countrywide to make their donation if they can. The account number is 9133246 and the name of the account is the Belize Red Cross Appeal." Doctors, medicine and specialist rescue teams from around the world continued to arrive in Haiti today, as the earthquake-battered country faced up to a humanitarian crisis that officials estimate has claimed more than one hundred thousand lives. As the scope of the disaster began to come into focus, offers of help began pouring in. Another organization that is asking its membership to contribute to the cause is the Belize Tourism Industry Association. Dionne Miranda is BTIA’s President. Dionne Miranda; President, BTIA "First of all, I must to express to the people of Haiti, especially those that are living in Belize, that we are severely disheartened by this situation that has occurred and that we are really looking towards being able to assist. One of the first things that the BTIA is doing is calling out to all our members in the entire country, those are six hundred plus members asking them to help us in making this a consolidated effort. We are supporting the Belize Red Cross so all donations will be directed through them. We understand that the Red Cross has made a decision that there won't be accepting physical goods or clothing or anything like that because it would be too difficult to actually transport it into Haiti and to distribute it. They are looking at actual finances so I am really appealing to my membership out there and the entire Belizean public. This could have happened to us and these are the times we need to reach out to each other. Haiti has joined us as a CARICOM brother and we do share like tourism in the Caribbean as a grouping and we really do need to give to these people in need at this time. As I mentioned it could be us. At this point in time I know how difficult it is for a lot of us because we are seeing a down grade in tourism as we are seeing throughout the world but this is the time to give. Please I am asking all of you. Look at the stories that are on the television; people are suffering and at that magnitude our hearts have to go out to the people of Haiti." Dionne Miranda, President of the Belize Tourism Industry Association. Love FM NOTICES
