Public meeting at San Mateo
tonight
As part of their Education, Health and Child
Welfare class students of
the University of Mississippi arrived on the island eager to learn what
they could. What they got was a shock into the stark contradiction of
living in some of the rural areas in Ambergris Caye. The area that they
have had the opportunity to see has been the San Mateo Area and last
Saturday, these seven students met with close to 25 families in the
area which candidly discussed the issues plaguing their everyday life.
![]() From the lack of electricity to high
expenditure in the price of water
to a non existent road these families expressed their frustration in
not receiving any assistance from government officials. In the meeting
which spanned over an hour, parents discussed the unhealthy lifestyle
which they are forced to go through without the existence of a proper
road. All those in attendance were in agreement when they said that
they would have no qualms in helping to get funding and offered labor
to make the road a reality.
![]() Finances need to be raised so that
assessment and purchasing of
material can commence. Other problems will also be addressed in an
effort to provide the residents a better standard of living. Because of
this, students continue in their efforts to gather as much information
from residents as to their needs and their opinions on how to move
forward. Therefore, students of the University of Mississippi are
inviting residents of the San Mateo Area and the general public to a
town meeting to be held at the church in San Mateo.
Everyone is asked to meet at the yellow building (church) on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. Together a better San Pedro can be built. San Pedro Sun Who's listening?
No one - at least yet!
Lisbeth Ayuso Fighting
crime may take on a new dimension in the future as the Ministry of
National Security contemplates the use of
intercepting software that
will enable law enforcement in Belize to legally eavesdrop on
telephone conversations, and intercept faxes, emails, chat and
text
messages.
The Reporter has learned that an Israeli company identified as Nice Track visited Belize last year and carried on some fact-finding work with the Ministry’s approval. According to Minister of National Security Carlos Perdomo, the company specializes in intercepting data for intelligence gathering. Nice Track contacted the ministry as a potential client and since then the Ministry has been gathering data on the technology. While here, representatives of the company and the Ministry of National Security visited the telecommunication companies SMART and BTL to solicit their help in setting up a system designed for Belize’s needs. Oliver Del Cid, the Deputy National Security Coordinator in the Ministry of Natural Resources, has been assigned the fact finding task with respect to lawful intercepts, Perdomo said. We are in the learning stages and we are gathering all information. We are looking at Guyana, Jamaica and one other country’s legislation (on lawful interception). We believe is useful to learn how it operates especially since the Caribbean has seen it fit to implement its use. Perdomo stressed that no move has been made to implement the technology and that the ministry is only gathering information. Prime Minister Barrow told Reporter that he has gone on record to state publicly that he supports the idea of lawful interception and does not shy away from this as a distinct likelihood. Reporter Father of the Nation turns 91
Today The Father of the Nation, Right
Honorable George Cadle Price
turned 91. Born on January 15th, 1919 the former Prime Minister is well
respected for his arduous and visionary contribution made to form a
part of Belize’s history. As a young politician, Honorable Price led
the peaceful and constructive, Belizean revolution that paved the way
to Universal Adult Suffrage, Self-Government, identity as Belize and
eventually our Independence.
![]() The former leader is a blessing to the Jewel
and for that The San Pedro Sun
joins the nation in wishing the Father of the Nation, the Right
Honorable George Cadle Price a happy birthday. May God bless our former
leader with health and goodwill and may you live to see many, many more
birthdays.
San Pedro Sun NEW DEVELOPMENTS AT GALEN UNIVERSITY
Galen University today signed three
Memorandums or
Understanding
with three local and international organizations. The collaboration
with the organizations will enhance the university’s research and
communication capabilities. Love News spoke to Galen University Provost
Doctor Nancy Adamson.
Doctor Nancy Adamson; Provost, Galen University "The first own we are signing with Doctor Arlie Petters and the Petters Research Institute in Dangriga. This agreement is to go forward on Joint academic activities and a variety of areas and also community development projects for our students. The second MOU we are signing is with Doctor John McAfee and his company World Echo League Limited. They will be establishing lab facilities at Galen University and we will be cooperating on scientific research, creating new opportunities for Galen students and faculty to participate in research. The third agreement we are signing is with Mr. Rene Villanueva and RSV Limited and this is in the area of cooperation on broadcasting. We hope to discuss the possibility of broadcasting some Galen University courses over Love TV and finding ways to reach out across the country to share the exciting educational programming that is happening here at Galen." In addition to the signing of the MOU’s Galen is also announcing two new graduate programs. Doctor Nancy Adamson; Provost, Galen University "The first is a Masters of Arts and Anthropology that will allow students from across Belize get a graduate degree in Anthropology. Faculty such as Doctor Jamie Awe, Doctor John Morris both from the Institute of Archaeology and some of the Anthropology faculty in Galen will be supervising that. Students can focus on Archaeology of Social Anthropology. The second masters degree we introduced today is Masters of Social Science and there students will be able to develop their own graduate program within any area of Social Science. There will be some common courses students will take and then they might say I would like to concentrate on Economic Policy or development issues or environmental studies. Social Science covers a wide range of topics. We are excited about both of those new graduate programs they will start in September of 2010." Love FM BIG INCREASE IN PRICE OF BUTANE GAS
The price of a 100 pound cylinder of butane
gas has increased by 10
dollars. A government release says this is as a result of continuous
spikes over the last quarter in international petroleum prices and
by-products of the industry. It says this has been brought on
partially, by seasonal demand from bursts in increased consumption
particularly due to extreme weather conditions and subsequently a draw
down on international inventories to meet increased demand. Consumers
in Belize City and Corozal will now pay 107 dollars, in Orange Walk 108
dollars, 109 dollars in Belmopan and San Ignacio, 110 in Benque Viejo
del Carmen, 111 dollars in Dangriga and 112 dollars in Punta
Gorda.
Government says it is currently researching and exploring options that are aimed at alleviating future price hikes. Government says through continuous dialogue with the importers of liquid petroleum gas they are seeking solutions to resolve and address concerns surrounding the commodity and its price.
