P.M. Musa says Belize should export,
and not refine oil

“If we find oil in commercial quantities, if we are blessed by the Almighty with that, then we should export it,” said Prime Minister, Hon. Said Musa, in an interview with Amandala on Wednesday, January 11, 2006. P.M. Musa said that it is very encouraging that Belize Natural Energy (BNE), the company extracting oil from Spanish Lookout, Cayo, is preparing to export 45,000 barrels oil via a barge from Big Creek. Third well hits oil at Spanish Lookout

When we last checked in with Belize's petroleum industry, a third well was being drilled at Spanish Lookout, not far from the first two successful strikes. Today the Geology and Petroleum Department has confirmed that this well, named Michael Usher Number Three, has also tapped into the same oil bearing formation, at a slightly deeper level than the first two. Additional wells will be spudded which, along with 3-D seismic work, should provide an outline of the size of the field, which is believe to run between two thousand and four thousand acres. More

PROFESSIONAL ENGINEERS TO HOLD EARTHQUAKE SEMINAR
The Association of Professional Engineers opened a three-day earthquake engineering seminar today. Just because you don't get an earthquake every year, even every ten years or every fifty years it doesn't mean that you can't have a major earthquake. The seismicity is dependent on where faults are and we do have a fault that passes close to southern Belize. Secondly, a large earthquake can be extremely devastating and usually causes more loss of life than a hurricane because there is no warning. Third, and foremost it's not that difficult to design for both so while we are designing to make sure structures can withstand hurricanes we might as well also make sure that they won't cause loss of life during an earthquake.
