GOB To IMF: We Missed Fiscal Deficit Target
This year, under pressure from the IMF, government committed that it would reign in the spiraling deficit to 3.6% of GDP. Well, last week when the IMF team made its regular visit, Prime Minister and minister of Finance Said Musa gave them the bad news: things change; the final deficit will be more like 5.6% of GDP. And what does government blame it on? Well, that catch all culprit: rising world fuel prices. Government told the IMF that it lost US$25 million in taxes from fuel when it had to absorb increases to keep the price for a gallon of gas close to $10. More

Voting: some Belizeans more
equal than others
Candidates and officials in seven towns and two cities are gearing up for elections on March first... but while all eyes are on the municipal balloting, a look at the national voter's list reveals that the elaborate redistricting exercise conducted over the last two years has produced a situation in which--once again--voters living outside Belize City are being shafted. The forty-seven men and women who do the work are all full time police officers who have been trained and have the powers of arrest. More

And today, the official opening of a new processing facility in the north ensured that we won’t be running out of the popular birds any time soon.
During ceremonies in Blue Creek this morning, Caribbean Chicken opened the doors to its largest ever investment: a two million dollar state of the art factory designed to improve capacity, safety, and efficiency. More

Warmer Seas Will Wipe Out Plankton, Source of Ocean Life

Scientists have discovered a way that the vital plankton of the oceans can be starved of nutrients as a result of the seas getting warmer. They believe the findings have catastrophic implications for the entire marine habitat, which ultimately relies on plankton at the base of the food chain. The study is also potentially devastating because it has thrown up a new "positive feedback" mechanism that could result in more carbon dioxide ending up in the atmosphere to cause a runaway greenhouse effect.
