San Pedro sports arena gets face lift
Currently, the work being done is replacing the back boards, painting of the walls, replacing the old basketball rims and more to make it functional for the youth. The total cost of refurbishing the five-a side complex is approximately $10,000. This project will then mark the initiation of the tournaments that were postponed because of the lack of the proper playing grounds. Elijio was ecstatic about the completion of the projects and stated that this is just one of the many projects they will be worked on. The next goal involves installing a basketball court at the Boca del Rio Park. The start on the project is uncertain at the time, but it has been promised that it will begin in the coming weeks. Two books to advance the history and development of Belize
“It is a valuable work of research and scholarship. The books should be on the reading list of every high school student in Belize. ”I refer to two companion books just published by James S. Murphy, Belize’s Ambassador to the United States, and High Commissioner to Canada from 1996 to 2000. The first of these, The Guatemalan Claim to Belize: A Handbook on the Negotiations, is a compendium of the many attempts to settle outstanding differences over title to Belize’s territory. The second book: Belize and Guatemala: Court time? describes the Facilitation Process under the auspices of the Organisation of American States and follows as it leads to Guatemalan rejection and what now appears to be the end of the line of the negotiation process euphemistically called  “An Agreement on a Framework for Negotiations”. Under this Framework Belize and Guatemala will try to find common ground on issues they can agree on. More

CAULIFLOWER - THE NEW HOT MONEY MAKING BUSINESS IN BELIZE
Was shopping for Jamaican Ginger Beer in a Chinese Supermarket, one of three or four such, in Santa Elena town yesterday and a fellow asked me if I was heading for Spanish Lookout. He said he farmed on the other side. I asked him what he farmed? He said cauliflowers and he just sold his load to the Supermarket and was looking for a ride back. I was a bit taken aback with my elbow resting on the window of my mud covered pickup truck. I washed it when I bought it and plan to wash it again in ten years as is my custom. I looked at this strange man, an Indigenous native Mayan Indian of Western Belize, who spoke flawless International English and not your Creole dialect of the coast at all. His ancestors had been living in Belize for more than ten thousand years. Cauliflower I asked in mystification? More

Voices from the Zapatista Plenary Session in Chablekal, Yucatán
The Other Campaign’s First Day of Meetings in the State
Carmelo Aké’s voice trembled, but his spirit did not break. Standing before Subcomandante Marcos he clenched both his teeth and the microphone, and his words took strength: “We don’t want any more of this, I hope they realize that we are not animals, we are indigenous, we also have the blood of Christ.”Carmelo came to Chablekal from Sotuta, the land of 16th century indigenous rebel leader Nachi Cocom, to ask all those participating in the Other Campaign to unite “against the marginalization caused by the bad governments.”
“I live and work in the fields, selling coal in order to give a life to my children, but it is miserable life created by the tyrants, and we want no more of that,” he said, with a lump in his throat. More
