Rains Cause Flooding in Belize Between
nine last
Sunday night and through mid-week, much of the Belize was trapped in a
deluge of water. Rainfall gauges at the Hershey compound on the
Hummingbird Highway this Monday, January 23, recorded 5.17 inches,
while Belize City was flooded by some 3.8 inches. And where was all
this tropical moisture coming from in the middle of January? More

4 storey buildings approved! For long, many have complained of the rapid
development occurring in
Ambergris Caye. Many brace the idealized notion of a small sleepy
village but change is inevitable. One of the biggest changes that for
long has been fought and is now proving to be a lost cause is the issue
with four storey buildings. This week, The San Pedro Sun received
contradictory information of permits approved for the construction of
four story structures. A reliable source commented that indeed two
permits had been approved one on the Boca Ciega Area and the other six
to seven miles on North Ambergris Caye. Chairperson for the Ambergris
Caye Housing and Planning Committee (ACHPC), Mel Spain stated that only
one permit had been approved in the Holiday Lands Area. More
2005: Warmest Year On Record A study
released by NASA yesterday confirmed that 2005 was the warmest year on
record, narrowly beating out 1998. That year a strong El Niño--a
warm
water event in the eastern Pacific Ocean--added significant warmth to
global temperatures. The new record was set without the help of an El
Niño. This suggests that a very sustantial warming trend is
affecting
the globe and more "warmest years ever" will continue to occur in this
decade--particularly if they are El Niño years. Global warming
since
the middle 1970s is now about 0.6° C (1° F ). Total warming in
the past
century is about 0.8° C (1.4° F). The five warmest years over
the last
century have occurred in the last eight years. Reliable instrument
records of global temperatures extend back to about 1880, but the
consenus scientific view is that the current level of warmth has been
unmatched for at least the past 125,000 years.
