A Tale of Two Businesses
Leo had a small hotel on the coast. His friend Andy ran a tour business, taking guests to Maya sites, the cayes and other attractions. Business wasn't spectacular, but it was steady and growing. Leo decided to build two more rooms, and Andy began looking for a new van. Now, the government had just put in a new tax system, the GST, but like most people, Leo and Andy hadn't paid much attention to it. Leo was happy to find that accommodation in the tourism industry was exempt from GST. "That's good news!" he told his wife. So Leo began ordering cement, blocks, zinc roofing and other materials he needed for construction. He was surprised to find that everything was so much more expensive. He mentioned this to his accountant friend, Javier. "Yeah mon, your business is exempt, put you still need to pay GST on everything you buy for it." More

Kriol Project Releases Grammar Book
For years the Kriol Council has been fighting tooth and nail to have Kriol as a language and over the years they have made tremendous strides. But tonight they make the one that is expected to be the definitive pace forward at telling Belizeans and the world that Kriol is not a mere dialect, a derivative of English, in fact it is a language on to itself. After working for years with linguistics expert Ken Decker, the Kriol Council has come up with the Kriol Grammar Book. More

No Major Disruptions in Labour
and Skills Under CSME
CARICOM member states should suffer no major disruption from the free movement of labour and skills provided under the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME), says Steven Mac Andrew, movement of skills/labour specialist with the CSME Regional Unit. According to Mr. Mac Andrew, CARICOM nationals will always go wherever they feel they have better opportunities and if these 'greener pastures' happen to be within the CSME, this should be welcomed. "Every CARICOM national who stays in this region, it's a benefit to the region, instead of going abroad where we might not benefit as much from their knowledge and skills," he points out. More

Earth could warm up faster than previously thought
Recent studies of some of nature's environmental "records" show that global warming can penetrate deep into the ocean faster than scientists have realized. In fact, some such penetration may have already begun. The record keepers are foraminifera — "forams" for short — creatures so tiny that several could sit together on a pinhead. The mineral composition of their shells reflects the environmental conditions under which they grow. Flavia Nunes and Richard Norris at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, Calif., reported earlier this month in Nature that the foram record includes a global warming event that provides a warning for our own times. Although it occurred 55 million years ago, they consider it a good analogue for studying the causes and consequences of our own global warming. More

Sea level rise 'is accelerating'
Global sea levels could rise by about 30cm during this century if current trends continue, a study warns.
Australian researchers found that sea levels rose by 19.5cm between 1870 and 2004, with accelerated rates in the final 50 years of that period. The research, published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, used data from tide gauges around the world. More
