STABBING LEAVES SAN PEDRO MAN
HOSPITALIZED
A San Pedro man remains hospitalized at the
Karl Heusner Memorial
Hospital following a stabbing incident which occurred this past weekend
on Ambergris Caye. According to San Pedro Police, they are still
investigating the circumstances that led to the stabbing incident that
occurred on Sunday, January 25th at Mata Chica resort five miles north
of Ambergris Caye. Police visited a private clinic in San Pedro Town
sometime around 12:15 on Sunday morning where they saw a man suffering
from three stab wounds; one to his lower back and two to his upper
neck. The man was identified as 22-year-old Ismael Lisby, a bar tender
of the resort and resident of the Boca del Rio Area of San Pedro Town.
Lisby who was airlifted to the KHMH told police that sometime around
11:30 on Saturday night, he was stabbed with a knife during an
altercation. He told Police that the person responsible is his
co-worker, 19-year-old Dan Lopez, a security officer of the resort and
a resident of San Pedro Town. That same night, Lopez visited the police
station to explained and told police that Lisby’s shift was over at the
resort and he therefore had no business on the premises. However,
Lisbey remained on the premises and according to Lopez; Lisby
challenged him to a fight over an old misunderstanding. Lopez told
police that during the fight, Lisby pulled out a knife causing an
injury to Lopez’s right side. Lopez went on to tell police that, at
that point he pulled out his baton and hit Lisby managing to take the
knife away. Lopez claimed that the struggle continued and that’s when
Lisby was stabbed. Lisby received three stab wounds; one of which
punctured his lungs and was airlifted for further medical treatment at
the KHMH. Lisby is now listed in a stable condition at the hospital.
Lopez on the other hand received abrasions to the left side of his body
and bruises to his lips. No one has been arrested and police continue
their investigations.
Love FM No Sanctuary for
Former Guatemalan President in Belize
Former Guatemalan President Alfonso
Portillo is a fugitive wanted for money laundering in his home country
and the United States.
He was caught in the Izabal Department of Guatemala on Tuesday morning.
International press reports say he was in the beach resort in Punta De
Palma. That is a small area of Atlantic Coast adjoining Puerto Barrios.
The interesting part is that when he was arrested Guatemalan
authorities say he had already hired a boat headed for you guessed
it - Belize!
As you can see on the map, Punta De Palma like Barrios is just a short distance from Belize. Guatemalan Attorney General Amilcar Velasquez said authorities had been following Portillo for four days before arresting him the day after a U.S. indictment was unsealed in Federal Court in New York.
The American indictment says that during his
term as president from 2000 to 2004, Portillo embezzled $1.5 million in
donations from Taiwan intended to buy school books. Portillo allegedly
endorsed checks drawn from a New York bank and deposited them in a
Miami account. The money was then allegedly transferred to a Paris
account in the name of his ex-wife and daughter.
The indictment also alleged that Portillo and the Credito Bank President stole money from the bank's publicly financed reserves. Portillo also allegedly embezzled nearly $4 million from Guatemala's Ministry of Defense in 2001 with help from two unnamed co-conspirators from the army, the indictment said. He has denied the allegations. If Portillo is extradited to the U.S., he would be arraigned on money-laundering charges that carry a maximum of 20 years in prison. CH7 Battle over rights and freedoms
taken to Privy Council
A case against the government by a group of
concerned citizens
in a battle over fundamental rights and freedoms has gone all the way
to the Privy Council. It all started when GOB decided to amend the
referendum act without consulting the people. A group of residents were
not willing to have their rights taken away so they first took the
matter to the Supreme Court in 2008 and won. The government appealed
and was again unsuccessful when the panel of judges upheld the Supreme
Court’s decision. It seems a second opinion was not enough and so
government went an expensive step further and took the case to London
in the highest court of appeal. Attorneys Lois Young and Lloyd Barnett
from Jamaica appeared on behalf GOB while Lisa Shoman on behalf of the
group of citizens. The Privy Council reserved judgment at close of
arguments late last week and Shoman told us why this morning.

Concerned Citizens
They, as I said were interested in the Barry Bowen case. They are very keen to see what reason the court of appeal will give for the decision and so they have already indicated that it may be best to wait. Marleni Cuellar So this decision may be based on the ruling. Lisa Shoman It certainly may be informed by it if it’s not based. I know that, from what I understand. They will be waiting to see how that goes. William Neal I find it a lot of things because of the way our country is run and how polarized we are, because of your own political background, it immediately became a political issue. Lisa Shoman Yes it did and in fact, at the time this was not a PUP issue. This was a bunch of lawyers sitting around saying look, is this something that we believe is right for the country. We discussed it with many, many citizens. Some people said, look I’m sympathetic but really and truly this government just win so I noh want get inna dis issue. But we did find four Belizeans who were brave enough to put their name to the complaint and who then took the matter to court and said look, this is an issue which although it scans political and I make no apologies for that, is an issue which in the end is going to benefit Belizeans because I cannot understand how, in any democracy it can be bad to have more consultations rather than less. So that was the background to which Anthony Sylvestre, Kevin Arthurs and myself took on this case and we have been dealing with it ever since. CH5 HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION CONDUCT
COUNTRYWIDE WORKSHOPS
The Human Rights Commission is holding a
series of Human
Rights
workshop in the Cayo District. Today one of the workshops was held in
San Ignacio Town where a number of issues were brought forth including
police brutality. Love News spoke with Maria Gamero, Co- President of
the Human Rights Commission.
Maria Gamero - Co- President, Human Rights Commission. We are trying to compile all what the people are saying and then make one document. Hopefully this document will be shared with all the people, with all the Ministries. We are hoping that something more positive can happen. I think one if the major coming out is the police brutality and the other issue coming out heavily was the lands problem. You know that many people are facing with their land being taken away for X reasons and it’s done by politicians and whats not you know. So I think those two issues should be coming out shortly. Joseph Budna - Reporter We saw that there were customs officers, immigration officers, police, but they were one concern, an issue drawn up by many who attend and the question is, why the San Ignacio Police did not attend? They didn’t have an invitation knowing this Human Rights Workshop is taking place in the centre of the town in San Ignacio? Maria Gamero - Co- President, Human Rights Commission. As I mentioned the invitations were sent to Mary’s Open Doors and they said that they did sent and invitation. I did what I could higher up but then the invitations were being given in the Town itself by Mary’s Open Door and they said that they did sent out the invitation. Why didn’t they come, I don’t know. The workshop wraps up on Thursday afternoon. Love FM NOTICES
