Chalillo Dam produces electricity![]() In an
effort to make Belize more energy self-sufficient, the new Chalillo
hydro-electric power plant has recently come on-line, doubling the
hydro-electric output of the combined Chalillo and Mollejon Power
Plants. The energy supplied by the Chalillo and Mollejon plants costs
about 17
cents per kilowatt hour (kWh). Electricity purchased from Mexico
averages 44 cents per kWh and energy from diesel generators averages
about 42 cents per kWh. More
Whale 'vomit' sparks cash bonanza
An Australian couple who picked up an
odd-looking fatty lump from a quiet beach are in line for a cash
windfall.
Leon
Wright
and his wife took home a 14.75kg lump of ambergris, found in
the innards of sperm whales and used
in perfumes
after it has been vomited up. Sought after because of its rarity,
ambergris can float on the ocean for years before washing ashore. Worth
up to $20 a gram, Mr Wright's find on a South Australian beach could
net his family US$295,000 (£165,300). MoreThe paralysis of fear:
CARICOM’s greatest enemy On January 1st last year the CARICOM
countries were scheduled to launch the Caribbean Single Market (CSM)
with the development into a Single Economy by 2008.
It didn’t happen. But the citizens and residents of CARICOM countries – as well as the rest of the world – were assured that the CSM would be inaugurated on January 1st 2006. Numerous public statements from the CARICOM Secretariat declare that the Single Market started on January 1st this year. In contradiction to those statements, there is to be a ceremony to launch the Single Market in Jamaica on January 30th, and then only by six of the member states: Barbados, Belize, Guyana, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago and Suriname. More Special Constables
Awarded
San Pedro Town Council have jointly given
out two awards in recognition
of the hard work and dedication of two
individuals to the island of
Ambergris Caye. On Friday, January 20, 2006, Mayor Elsa Paz and
Inspector Sabal presented special constables Samuel Gomez and Orlando
Mendez with certificates of outstanding performance for their
dedication in assisting the San Pedro Police Department in reducing
crime on the island. More Give the
