NEW
DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC PROSECUTIONS APPOINTED
While Government
has already named Senior Counsel,
Lutchman Sooknandan as the new Director of Public Prosecutions, that
post is not exactly filled as yet. That’s because according to
Sooknandan, the terms of agreement for the post are still being worked
out and sometime today or tomorrow we should know for sure if he has
accepted the post. Sooknandan says he is not willing work for
the
same salary as former D-P-P, Kirk Anderson, because he has far more
experience, saying Anderson worked under him at the D-P-P’s office back
in the 90’s. He added that his 11 years of private practice as a
defense attorney gives even more leverage to his career. Police
Commissioner, Gerald Westby, says he looks forward to
his department and the DPP working together. Gerald Westby: Police
Commissioner “I
have already sent a congratulatory letter to him and assuring him of
our fullest cooperation. What happen in the past is water under the
bridge. I want to say that I have always respected the office of the
DPP and will continue to do so and it is enough work for us to be
targeting criminals that to be having this little friction and I’m
certain that as professionals we move on.” More
Tax
Dept., not police initiated Anderson incident
Today Assistant Commissioner of Income
Tax Marilyn Ordonnez emphasised
that the stopping of former D.P.P. Kirk Anderson at the airport for
non-payment of income tax was done at the behest of her department and
was not any rogue action by police officers attempting to settle old
scoresOrdonnez told us that, although rare, there have been previous
detentions for non-payment of income tax. She noted that while the
airlines may have grown lax in the checking for tax releases, the law
still requires all Belizeans and even foreigners resident more than
thirty days to have all their taxes settled prior to any trip abroad.
Frequent flyers can apply for a one year release and even those who owe
back taxes can be given a release provided a guarantor signs for their
liability. Although constitutional experts may want to look into the
legal validity of such a restriction on our freedoms, until that
happens travellers are advised to visit the tax office and avoid the
kind of embarrassment experienced by Anderson, who it may be recalled,
had to make a hasty trip to the bank before boarding a later flight. More COMMISIONER OF POLICE
COMMENTS ON 2006
Gerald Westby: Commissioner of
Police
“We have the so call Chiquibul bandits in Cayo. We were able to arrest that situation in Cayo where we have seven police BDF patrol in place and that will continue to make sure because the tourism industry is important. And the gun related violence in Belize City, we are having discussions with the police and these people involve with these gun related violence in Belize City and we are working with Kolbe foundation through the Southside renewal program which will be coming on stream so that we can provide alternatives and address the root causes of some of these problems.” Westby says the Police Department will continue to build on the successes of the last twelve months and hopes for greater community participation in fighting not only crimes; but the root causes of crime. Gerald Westby:Commissioner of Police “Well we have always been there. What we need to do is to harness the other people in a more focus and multisectorial approach you know having people working a task force working from one building where they can focus government agencies and non governmental agencies working together. We have always put a lot of focus in community policing. The police have always been out there because we realize that while interdiction is important we need to address some of the cause because that will pay off on the long run. That is the key and if we can get that I’m certain Mr. Woods and his team are trying to assist us in that avenue and we welcome this assistance because we need to address the societal problems that create or breed crimes.” More Nova Shrimp Farm
Closes Shop
It had been rumored for
weeks now and reports indicate that Nova Shrimp Farm at mile 13 on the
Northern Highway was closed today. At 1:00 this afternoon the skeleton
staff that remained on the compound following the closing of the season
last month was asked to leave work and not return until Friday to
collect their two weeks notice payment.Nova
typically cuts staff at Christmas when the shrimp harvest is over and
only keeps a few around to service the ponds and keep the factory
operational. But now, even those have been sent home. What's the
problem? While we were unable to confirm we understand that nova at
Ladyville has been unable to service debt with local as well as
international banks forcing them into closure. More
