Tourism: For whose benefit?
Caribbean governments and private sector bodies should urgently establish a Tourism Research and Development Institute at the University of the West Indies if the industry is to deliver the much vaunted social and economic growth that its advocates proclaim. Over the next ten years, the contribution to both GDP and employment is expected to rise even more. But, the danger exists that, if research and development is not undertaken to strengthen the industry and spread its benefits more widely, it will not deliver the sustainable development its advocates predict. Chalillo onstream but BECOL wants another dam at Vaca Falls
The much bally-hooed Chalillo hydroelectric facility added another 7.3 megawatts to the nation’s generating capacity when it came onstream last November, but the Belize Electric Company Limited (BECOL) is already suggesting another 18 megawatt hydro facility be built upstream from Vaca Falls in the Cayo district. Tip of the tropical iceberg
Internet businesses like Google, eBay, and Capella University require very little physical infrastructure, yet generate revenues that rival the annual budgets of many national governments. Such businesses can start up and establish headquarters anywhere, where there is reliable access to the Internet and a government that welcomes entrepreneurs, foreign and domestic. Caribbean governments should relax immigration restrictions and reduce or eliminate work-permit fees for those who would come to the region, in order to start online commercial ventures. More

Trade deal good news for region
It hasn't happened often in recent years, but some good economic news is now coming out of the Caribbean. On Jan. 23, the leaders of six Caribbean nations -- Barbados, Belize, Guyana, Jamaica, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago -- gathered in Kingston, Jamaica, to launch a common market, a goal that has taken more than three decades to accomplish. After several years of bad news -- including hurricanes, security concerns, migration surges and political instability in Haiti -- the prospects for 2006 are brighter, particularly as the Central American Free Trade Agreement, which includes the Dominican Republic, is fully implemented. THOUGHT OF THE DAY
Bear in mind that the wonderful things you learn in your schools are the work of many generations. All this is put in your hands as your inheritance in order that you may receive it, honor it, add to it, and one day faithfully hand it on to your children.
