Latin America: Growth in ecotourism - Take the green road
A mountain hostel in Ecuador epitomises the potential and the pitfalls of the fast-developing ecotourism industry Fifteen years ago, the scenic village of Chugchilán, high in the Ecuadorian mountains, had neither a telephone nor a hostel. Today it has internet access and a world-renowned hotel. Unlike most award-winning accommodation, however, the Black Sheep Inn has no television or swimming pool. It shuns tour groups. Guests are invited to choose from a vegetarian-only menu, wash with the hotel’s own brand of biodegradable soap and use its specially designed dry composting toilets. Ecolodges such as the Black Sheep Inn are becoming a prominent feature in the Latin American tourist market. With growth in the so-called “four Ss” (sun, sea, sex and sand) market beginning to flatten out, ecotourism is booming. Over the past decade, it has grown at a year-on-year rate of between 4% and 10% and now makes up an estimated 7% of the international tourism market. Latin American destinations such as Costa Rica and Belize are reaping the benefits of this exponential growth. More

Missed January 1 Deadline for Start of CAFTA Underlines the NAFTA Record and Threats of its Expansion
As CAFTA's End-Run Around Democratic Process Becomes Clear, Polls Show Popularity of the Deal - and Public Opinion of the United States - Plummets in Central America
The myth that people in Central America were clamoring for the controversial expansion of NAFTA - purveyed by corporate and Bush administration CAFTA supporters - has been refuted yet again.Days before the Central America Free Trade Agreement was to go into effect, news reports indicate that several of the CAFTA countries' parliaments - where the reality of having to make far-reaching, retrograde changes to public health and other domestic laws required by the commercial agreement - are reluctant to actually implement the deal. In Costa Rica's case, the Congress is simply unwilling to ratify the controversial agreement. More

Belize or bust:
Local man heads mission bus south
For the past five years when groups from Faith-Westwood Methodist Church and the College of St. Mary’s went on their joint missionary trips to Belize, they had to get to their destinations by riding in the back of sugar cane trucks, sometimes for as long as two and a half hours.
But the days of shacking up with chicken coops and bundles of sugar cane are over. This year, Jim Ryan, owner of Kelly Ryan Manufacturing in Blair, has outfitted a school bus that he, along with Belizean Raul Clarke and Pastor Chuck Cornwell from Faith-Westwood Methodist Church, will use to make the more than 2,200 mile journey to Calcutta, Belize on the ground.
