San Pedro's
Leticia Lara wins
Miss World Belize 2009 Homero Ayuso ![]() Miss World Belize 2009, Leticia Lara, poses with Miss Amity, Corozal's Karen Middleton By
all accounts, the Miss World Belize 2009 pageant held in Corozal Town
last October 3rd was a resounding success, as eight young ladies from
various districts of the country competed for different titles,
including the prestigious Miss World Belize and Miss Earth Belize
crowns. But
the big winner that night was Leticia “Letty” Lara, a 21-year old
beauty from San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, who convinced the panel of five
judges that she would make a most worthy representative for Belize in
Johannesburg, South Africa, on December 12th.
On that 59th occasion of the Miss World pagaent, some 120 contestants will regale the world with their talent, intelligence and beauty. Reports are that Letty, a former Miss San Pedro (2005), showed “total focus from the first day of the competition,” crucial in a pageant that was based on the delegates’ performance, according to official Pageant Trainer Margaret Johnson. By winning the title of Miss World Belize 2009, the 3rd-year medical student who hopes to specialize in Pediatrics after obtaining her degree, also won the title to a residential lot donated by Minister of Health, Hon. Pablo Marin. Now, she has London (where the international pageant starts on Nov. 7th) to look forward to, with a full agenda that includes countless press appearances, a Charity Dinner, the allotting of places on the 2010 World Cup games schedule, as well as three “fast-track” events, any of which, if a delegate wins, assures her of a place in the Semi-finals of the contest. In Letty’s case, these will consist of a talent event, in which she has chosen to dance, a swimwear competition on the beach, and a runway modeling session. She will also be presenting herself in a national dress, for which she has chosen to showcase the Creole culture of Belize, given the theme of this year’s contest in Belize: “Belizean Rainforest Meets African Jungle.” “It’s an honour for me to represent Belize and San Pedro,” Ms. Lara told The Reporter enthusiastically. “I’ll do my best abroad.” She added that it was a tight competition, since she thought all the girls were very talented and deserving. However, she must still clear the monetary hurdle of aggregated expenses involved in getting to the pageant-venues and back, in addition to all the related costs, including participation fee ($7,000), attire and souvenir-gifts for nearly 120 fellow-delegates. Trainer Margaret Johnson estimates these expenses to total around $35,000. To help raise funds towards Letty’s participation as Miss World Belize in South Africa, the Pageant Belize Organization is going into overdrive in its fund raising efforts, with activities such as a Fashion Show to be held on Oct. 24. For her part, Letty says that the San Pedro business community, as well as private individuals, have pledged their material support to her. The general public is also invited to help in this endeavour by supporting these fund raising activities, or by direct contributions. They may call telephone number 629-5676 for more information. The title of Miss Earth Belize 2010, was won by Sherrylee Rodriguez, a 20-year old from Belize City, who was also the first runner-up for Miss World Belize, in addition to obtaining the Miss Catwalk and Miss Beach Beauty titles. Her prize was a $3,000 scholarship from Shell Free Zone gas station. Seventeen-year old Karen Middleton from the Corozal District, the 2nd runner-up, also secured Miss Amity. Daniella Woolley, 19, from the Cayo District, took Miss Photogenic. The title of Best Evening Wear-Presentation was won by 18-year old Victoria Garrell, resident of the nation’s capital, Belmopan. The winners of the various titles received other gifts, including swimwear, footwear, casual clothing, jewelry and accessories, according to information from Miss World Belize 2009 Chairman, Michael Arnold. Since Miss World Belize 2008, Charmaine Chinapen was unable to attend to crown the new queen, Keisha Daniels of Stann Creek, first runner-up in the 2008 competition, presented the titles and crowned all the winners on pageant night. Reporter Commentary: Dare to Be Great: Mama said there would be days like this! Spence M. Finlayson
Historically mothers have always had great
intuition, with and
generally common sense. My late mother was a gifted overcomer with a
powerful sense of dealing with the adversities of life. Whenever I am
experiencing a personal or professional challenge, I refer back to my
mother’s little box of “life’s instructions”. With the global economy
deep in the doldrums there have been many persons facing serious
setbacks like terminations, foreclosures on homes, automobiles
repossessed, evictions from rental apartments and the like.
When we are faced with the difficult days that mama talked about we must not fear the winds of adversity and always remember that a kite rises against the wind rather than with it. As Og Mandino says “search for the seed of good in every adversity”. Yes friends while you are going through your difficulty keep in mind that this too shall pass! You know it’s the ants in our lives that trip us up and not the elephants . Learn to deal with the small before it becomes the big stuff. Nobody is exempt from bad days. Days when nothing seems to go right; Murphy’s Law is running rampant and is in full effect. You start out for work and you discover that you have a flat tyre. You procrastinated and did not repair your spare tyre. You forgot to pay your cell phone bill and it has been disconnected and you are expecting some important calls from your clients. Because you were running late, you left an important report that you needed for your presentation at your managers meeting. So if you are having a really bad day, it may be a good idea to withdraw a little if you can. Take a long walk during your lunch break to “clear’ your head and to refocus. You may even consider going home early and regrouping for the next day. Remember as Elbert Hubbard said “do not take life too seriously. You will never get out of it alive”. The only difference between a good day and a bad day is your attitude. Yes your attitude will make the difference. So as you go through your day be encouraged and know that it will change. Life’s challenges are not supposed to paralyze you, they are supposed to help you discover who you are and what you are made of. Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass; its about learning to dance in the rain. I can recall a situation that I found myself in many years ago; I had owned a beautiful sports car, a cherished possession, and I loaned it to my nephew to attend his high school prom. Well he wrote the car off and the next morning I had to give a motivational presentation to a major commercial bank in the Bahamas. My mind was obviously still on my little red sports car but I gave one of my best motivational speeches that morning. You see I didn’t wait for the “storm” to pass instead I was “dancing in the rain”. One unknown author said “You never see bad days in a photo album, but it is these days that get us from one happy snapshot to the next.” I have learned not to refer to my days as bad anymore. To me now everyday is a good day because this is the day that the Lord has made and I will rejoice and be glad in it. Top motivational speaker Zig Ziglar from Dallas, Texas says “If you don’t believe that every day is a good day then you try missing one of these days and you will see what happens”. I am a big fan of Zig Ziglar who I met personally at a Masters of the Success Conference in Miami, Florida. His best-selling book “See You At The Top” is one of my all time favorites. When I am experiencing a challenge during my day, I ask myself an important question; what did this come to teach me? The seemingly bad day is just one of the lessons in the University of Life curriculum. I must learn as much as I can so I can master it. Don’t give into the “bad day syndrome”. Stay focused on what you are trying to achieve, rising above your circumstances. I am here to tell you that you can start your day over at any time during the day. Spence M. Force adds to its numbers
Adolph Lucas ![]() Hon. Carlos Perdomo inspects the Guard during the passing out ceremonies Belize’s streets and borders will be more
secure with the addition of 64 new members of the Belize Defense Force
(BDF). Intake
number 52 passed out at official ceremonies at the Sir Colville Young
Parade Square,
in Price Barracks, Ladyville, on Thursday October 1. The Minister of
National Security, Hon. Carlos Perdomo was the guest speaker at the
ceremony. He pointed out that the passing out of these recruits
demonstrates the BDF’s commitment to maintaining a high level of
preparation among its ranks.
According to Minister Perdomo, the training that the recruits received over the past 16 weeks is in keeping with the vision of the Force, and that of realizing the National Security Strategy for Belize. “The BDF’s 31 plus years of diligent work and unwavering devotion to the security of this jewel have not gone unnoticed, and may I reassure you of the Government of Belize’s commitment to ensure the growth and survivability of the Belize Defence Force” Minister Perdomo stated. The recruits underwent 16 weeks of rigorous training in basic soldiering, shooting skills, First Aid, military signals and map reading, among many other activities. Training Assistant, Lieutenant Gaynel Robateau, noted the training was divided into two phases. In the first, they did drills, weapons handling and learned the discipline of being a soldier. Then, the intake had a chance to practice what they had learned by undertaking jungle training - jungle survival for two days and having to provide water, food, and shelter for themselves. The Champion Recruit Award was presented to Kevon Gongora. The Champion Shot award went to Dennis Flowers, and the Champion award in Physical Training went to Robert Stephenson. The Best Field Craft award was presented to to Julio Sarceno. Minister Perdomo conducted an inspection of the ranks, and the program concluded with musical interludes by the BDF Band.
