Late Night Flights
![]() If you were wondering what the heck was up
last night will all the late
night flights and airplanes hovering above town until about 8p.m., you
were as puzzled as most town residents. Check with airport personnel,
Ambergris Today discovered that both local airlines are conducting take
off and landing preparations for night flights during the upcoming
season.
Airline pilots are required to practice such procedures with a trained pilot, usually the company's chief pilot. Night flights are currently only authorized between San Pedro and the Phillip Goldson International Airport as they are the only to with equipped runway lights. As the year's end comes closer, nightfall in the country is a bit earlier and many international flights into Belize arrive just short of sunset. When the local airlines cannot fly their passengers in before nightfall, the airlines accommodate them at hotels in the city, costing money. With trained pilots to make night flights, it eliminates this problem and both airlines can fly in tourists after sundown. Ambergris Today 12th Belize/Cuba Mixed
Commission
will be held in Havana Cuba The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign
Trade is pleased to
announce that the 12th Session of the Belize/Cuba Mixed Commission will
be held in Havana, Cuba on the 22nd and 23rd of October. The Belize
Delegation will be headed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and
Foreign Trade, the Hon. Wilfred Elrington along with other government
representatives from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Health,
Education, and Agriculture as well as members of the Mayor’s
Association.
The Belize Delegation will meet with counterparts in Havana over a two day period to identify and develop new areas of cooperation which will be mutually beneficial to both countries. It is expected that ongoing projects and collaboration will be strengthened. Proposals, for further mutual benefit, include technical cooperation projects in education, health, foreign affairs, agriculture, forensics, disaster management and culture. Ministry of Education officials will also meet with Belizean students studying in Cuba. Presently there are approximately 250 Belizean Students pursuing academic studies in various parts of the island in a wide number of disciplines. The two countries have been collaborating on bilateral cooperation projects since 1999 starting with the Cuban Medical Brigade assistance in the Public Health Care System of Belize and the Medical Scholarship Programme. The Belize Government provides ten scholarships annually for Cubans to study English as a second language at the Regional Language centre in Belmopan.GOB Intl Conference of Responsible Tourism
in Belmopan
The concept of sustainable tourism, which
seeks to allow mass
tourism with as little damage to the natural resources, has been around
for some time. But this week tourist operators are talking responsible
tourism. And while that is also aimed at resource preservation, it
simultaneously boosts cultural development. The International
Conference on Responsible Tourism (I.C.R.T.) is taking place at the UB
auditorium in Belmopan, where industry stakeholders are gathering to
discuss the growing trends particularly at the time when the number of
visitors have declined in most tourism destinations. News Five found
out from the Technical Officer in the Ministry of Tourism, Yashin
Dujon, what the I.C.R.T. is expected to do for Belize’s tourism
industry.
Yashin Dujon, Technical Officer, Ministry of Tourism “The I.C.R.T. is a worldwide network that is dedicated to responsible tourism development and education all throughout the world. The Belize branch opened up a little over a year ago and our intent is to encourage local hoteliers, tour operators and stakeholders in the industry to start to develop and incorporate more responsible practices in their day to day business.” Delahnie Bain “Okay, what are some of those practices?” Yashin Dujon “Well, a few years ago there was a best management practice program that was run through hotels and it was funded through the GEF and run by the Rainforest Alliance and Program for Belize that focused on putting in conservation equipment into hotels, electrical management programs, water conservation, shower heads and things of that nature. What we’re doing is taking that philosophy and moving it along quite a bit more. What we need to do is to be able to assure that tourism dollars in Belize find their way to all people that participate in the industry and not just a chosen few. What we have done is that we have brought people engaged and involved in responsible tourism from all corners of the world; South Africa, India, the US, Canada, UK, Europe and we’ve brought them all to Belize for this forum. The forum that we’re at right now is the third of its kind being held in the world and it’s something that needs to be repeated and redone to highlight what any country is doing for responsible tourism development.” CH5 Tourism Ministry initiating
responsibility
in the industry
We asked Dujon what the ministry of tourism
is doing to make the idea of responsible tourism a reality.
Yashin Dujon “The Ministry of Tourism actually is the first government ministry that has incorporated a full environmental policy. You visit our offices at #106 South Street, you’ll find that we do have the water saving equipment in place, we have the energy saving equipment, we do have purchasing policies for example in place and everything that’s in place to encourage this. The ministry is also working hand in hand with APAMO on a responsible tourism policy for the country of Belize and we’re working on a new tourism master plan that will be developed next year.” Delahnie Bain “What has been the response so far to the idea of responsible tourism?” Yashin Dujon “I think that nationally, here in Belize it has been well accepted. Many people have been practicing responsible tourism and not known it for many years. We’ve been to places where people have said oh yes my granny used to teach me about things like this and actually it’s true. We are encouraging hotels to wash with rain water and to do very small things that make a huge difference to the industry here in Belize.” Approximately one hundred and eleven international delegates and ninety-six local delegates are expected to participate in the forums throughout the week. CH5 LETTERS
TO THE EDITOR
The Saga Humane
Society has received several complaints in the last
several weeks about crocodile feedings down by the water plant area
again. These feedings have resulted in the loss of two small dogs on
the island. One of these dogs was a family pet now being mourned by a
very distraught and traumatized child. Not only is this behavior
illegal and dangerous, it is clearly being conducted by morons. The
Saga Humane Society along with the South Ambergris Caye Neighborhood
Watch(SACNW) will increase patrols in the area and will prosecute to
the full extent of the law anyone conducting or participating in any of
these activities. The Wildlife Division has been notified of these
incidents and will also carry out an investigation and remove any
crocodiles now conditioned to human feedings. Anyone passing by that
area and seeing any of this illegal activity is asked to notify the
patrol at the SACNW station. That number is 610-4911.
Please help us protect our wildlife by stopping this illegal and very dangerous activity. Katy Eggert *Ambergris Caye
