According to the Statistical Institute of
Belize, earnings
from oil exports are down 60% - from $128 million last year to $52
million this year. That’s why there is genuine excitement in government
circles about the prospect of an oil find in the Gallon Jug area of
Belize, which is in the northwestern corner of the country. Data
suggests that there could be large reserves of oil in that area but
those high hopes had to be tempered recently after a first exploratory
well turned out to be a bust. Yesterday the Prime Minister told the
press that the developers expect that the second well will be luckier.
Hon. Dean Barrow, Prime Minister “All the experts say that if there is oil in this country, it is there and that if oil is there it is a lot of oil that is there. I’ve been told that the second well that is to be dug, which is fairly close to the first well, has in terms of the data an even higher potential than the first well which causes me to say two things; well it better be higher since the first well showed nothing and then if that is so why we never dig there first. But I am not an expert. Drilling of that second well is supposed to start very early next month or by the middle of next month and as I said, I imagine now that you’ve brought all this to light that all of us will be keeping fingers and toes crossed.” CH7 Brigadier General Luis Fernando
Orozco-Sanchez is
the new Military Attaché of Mexico Yesterday,
the Embassy of Mexico hosted a welcome reception for the new Military
and Air Attaché of Mexico to Belize. Ambassador of Mexico, H.E.
Luis
Manuel Lopez-Moreno introduced Brigadier General Luis Fernando
Orozco-Sanchez as the new Military Attaché of Mexico. The event
was
attended by the Commander of the Belize Defense Force, Gen. Dario
Tapia, the Commander of the Belize National Coast Guard, John Borland,
other officers of the force, members of the diplomatic corps and
Belizean government officials.
Since Belize's independence in 1981, the Mexican military have maintained a high level of cooperation and support to Belize. Particularly, in the last two years Mexico and Belize have increased their coordination. Some of those coordination mechanisms are the GANSEF -Spanish acronym for High Level Border Security Group, the Border Coordination Meetings Belize-Mexico, and the Border Military Commander Meetings. In order to continue strengthening the relation with Belize, the Mexican government nominated one of its most distinguished officials, Brigadier General Luis Fernando Orozco-Sanchez. Gen. Orozco is member of the Mexican Armed Forces since 1971. He trained as an official at the Heroic Military College of Mexico and the War Superior College of Mexico. He was awarded a Master Degree in National Security and Administration at the National Defense College of Mexico. Along his 38 year career in the Mexican Army, he has held positions in different sections and military zones in many states of Mexico. Ministry of Public Service conducts

In regional news, an end to the dispute
between ousted Honduran
president Manuel Zelaya and the interim government of Roberto
Micheletti is in sight. That is after a power-sharing agreement,
mediated by the US government, was signed between the parties to have
the Honduran congress decide on whether Zelaya will be restored to
power for the last few months of his term. Zelaya says he feels that
the deal will have him re-instated within the next week and he will
remain at the Brazilian Embassy until then. U.S. Assistant Secretary of
State for Western Hemisphere Affairs, Tom Shannon, was sent to mediate
along with a US delegation on Wednesday, four months after Zelaya was
ousted in an early morning coup. Governments worldwide advocated for
Zelaya’s reinstatement and threatened not to honor the upcoming
elections on November twenty-ninth, if democracy was not
restored. CH5
