San Pedro Sun NCFC
discusses
the
status
of
Belize’s
children
In the past two days, the
National Committee
for
Families and Children (NCFC) has held two of three parts in a
conference to discuss the current status of Belize’s children. Its
theme is “State of the Nation’s Children Conference, Coordinating the
Child Protection System: Building Protective Environments”. On day one,
all the stakeholders in the different government
departments, civil society, and the community partners met at the
Biltmore Plaza. It was here that different problems with the current
system of child-protective services were discussed.
The Minister of Human Development, Hon. Eden Martinez, addressed the conference saying that there are constant reminders in the media of the hideous crimes committed against children showing just how vulnerable children are when it comes to their different environments. He pointed out that they are not safe in school, at home, and in the community, and that it often is that the child exploitation is done by people who should be protecting them. The conference went on to address the systematic failures that contribute to the exploitation and abuse of children. On day two, about 450 children from all around the country gathered at the Belize Elementary School’s auditorium. They were invited to learn and participate in their own advocacy. They were granted a forum to discuss the issues that they have witnessed children such as themselves face. They were also presented with a pledge plan of ways that they can improve their lives and become more involved in the protection of their rights for the next three months. The next day of the conference has been postponed until the Prime Minister is back in the country. Guardian BELIZE ZOO DIRECTOR NOMINATED FOR

Sharon Matola – Director, Belize Zoo “Stunned. Stunned and honoured. I think it is a great honor to be considered for this prize." Patrick Jones - Reporter Did you imagine that your work would culminate with this citation? Sharon Matola – Director, Belize Zoo "Absolutely not. I enjoy what I do so much, it is such a pleasure to be able to live a life that you love living and to think that someone wants to award you for doing something you love; it is not within my comprehension right now. I am thrilled I think if I make it into the top six finalists it would be great notice for our country.” The Nominating Committee will review the applications and select six finalists who will announced in the first quarter of next year. The prize jury will then determine the winner who will be announced in md-2012. The next Indianapolis Prize Gala will is set for September 29, 2012. LoveFM Ground
breaking for
Mental Health Center On Monday,
the media was invited to the corner of
Vernon and Tibruce Street, where the Belize Mental Health Association,
in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, is planning to build a
new mental health institution. This specific parcel of land has been
leased by the Belize City Council for the facility to be built on.
This new facility has been estimated at $500,000, and the Mental Health Association is planning to equip it to be able to handle about 150 clients. It is being paid for by the Social Investment Fund. The plan is to turn it into a community-based facility that will provide assistance to homeless and mentally-ill persons. These persons will be facilitated with social support and training to be able to generate their own salaries to support themselves. The plan is that it will not provide residency for its clients however daily meals will be provided to the clients. The building plan for the facility is that in the next several months, it will be completed and the Mental Health Department, which is a part of the Ministry of Health, will begin a program known as the “psycho-social” care. In this program, the dependency upon medicine to deal with mental illness is diminished, and the problems that the patient’s illness has caused in relation to their social skills will be addressed. It is the hope of the Mental Health Association that the social-skill deterioration could be addressed in a majority of the mental illnesses that Belizeans have faced but ignored. In the meantime, Monday’s ceremony included the ceremonial ground breaking to signify that the process to the completion of the mental health facility has started. Guardian NOTICES
