Boca Del Rio Now
Sir Barry Bridge
Almost two years after the
tragic death of Bottling Magnate and
Philanthropist, Sir Barry Bowen, the island he called home honored his
legacy with the naming of a bridge. The Boca del Rio Bridge which was
completed in 2006 and links San Pedro Town to North Ambergris Caye was
built with major funding provided by Bowen. In ceremonies last weekend
celebrating the island's 27 years of township, the bridge was
officially renamed the 'Sir Barry Bowen Bridge'.
Sir Barry died in a plane
crash on February 26th of
2010 on the
island of San Pedro along with three other passengers on board his
privately owned Cessna.
The exact cause of the accident has still not been released. CH7 Beltraide
has
plans
to
up employment rate
Dyon A. Elliott Business Processing
Outsourcing (BPO) can help to reduce Belize’s unemployment rate. The
Belize
Trade and Investment Development Services (BELTRAIDE) is, therefore,
actively
seeking out and negotiating with BPO investors.
![]() This is the governing
rationale behind the BPO-investment strategies being implemented, Mike
Singh,
BELTRAIDE’s Executive Chairman, told the Reporter on Tuesday, November
22.
Commonly described as call centers, BPO firms have the potential to provide jobs to scores of Belizeans. Ready Call Center, for example, already employs approximately 900 people; Infotell has about 80 employees; and Transparent BPO, by mid-2012, is expected to have at least 450 employees, Singh explained. BELTRAIDE’s Director of Business and Investment Facilitation Services, Shahera McKoy, said these firms continue to expand, and because the other Central American countries’ English-speaking population has already been “saturated” with BPO firms, investors are looking for alternatives. This opens a door for Belize; however, we are often overlooked because investors mistake us for a Spanish-speaking country because we are situated in Central American. It is for this reason BELTRAIDE has launched an aggressive Public Relations campaign strategy as part of its four-pronged strategy to provide would-be investors with accurate information, McKoy explained. Singh also elaborated on the other strategies being utilized. He cited the two-week Business Processing Outsourcing Specialist Training Program that was held at ITVET. The program, which was a collaborative effort between BELTRAIDE and the Ministry of Education, concluded on Monday, with 66 persons being certified as BPO professionals. Coupled with the fact that Belizeans speak English as their first language, the training gives participants an extra advantage “by providing them with essential communication, customer service, sales skills and work ethics; thus, making them marketable for employment.” BELTRAIDE is also working along with Belize Telemedia to offer reduced bandwidth prices to give further incentives to investors. BELTRAIDE is also working with building owners to ensure that call-center-ready buildings are available in Belize. Singh says BELTRAIDE is currently negotiating with six firms. Reporter Rt.
Hon.
George Price
honored by the Embassy of El Salvador
The
late honorable George Price was
awarded and honored by the Embassy of El Salvador today. The ceremony
was held this morning at the George Price center for Peace and
Development in Belmopan. During the ceremony, the Government
Representative of El Salvador presented the award to the family of the
late George Price. The Governor General was one of the special guests
this morning and addressed the family.
Sir Colville Young, Governor General I would like to thank the Ambassador and thank his government and country for honoring our national hero, George Cadle Price as they have today. I believe I am right in saying that all Belizeans have welcomed with open arms the Salvadoran refugees to our country. They are good citizens and they have contributed to the building of our nation and those are ideal people to welcome into any country. Once again, I add to my tribute to the Hon. George Cadle Price, the Father of our nation and independence and once again I thank the Ambassador for this moving tribute to the Hon. George Cadle Price. Joseph Waight accepted the award on behalf of the family. He was presented with a medal of honor and a diploma titled “Friend of El Salvador”. Daeniel Campos, Min. Counsellor, Salvador Embassy It is truly an honor and a privilege to have the opportunity to remember his Excellency Rt. Hon. George Price. For this, owing and assisting the Salvadoran Community to reside in Belize, we now proceed in this ceremony to present the Medal of Honor and diploma "Friend of El Salvador" to a representative of the family of his Excellency the Rt. Hon. George Price. Joseph Waight On the behalf of Mr. Price who is my uncle, his many sisters and many nephews and nieces and really on the behalf of the people of Belize, it is indeed a great honor of respect to accept this honor. So indeed we want to say thank you and the government and the people of El Salvador, who will make good citizens of Belize as well. Thank you very much. The Salvadoran representative made the presentation and said that Hon George Price was very instrumental in assisting the Salvadoran community in Belize. Daeniel Campos Because of the civil war in El Salvador, many Salvadorans had to leave El Salvador looking for refuge. Those Salvadorans found refuge in Belize. So when the Rt. Hon. His Excellency George Cadle Price was a Prime Minister on Belize, he helped our people. He made it possible for the Salvadorian people here to be residents and to be Belizean citizens and one of the objectives is to provide them security, jobs and education and all these things made the Salvadoran people live here peacefully. Hon George Price died just before the country’s 30th Independence anniversary. He died on September 19 at the age of 92. PlusTV
