MEXICO:
Looking
For
Students With the Right Stuff
The Mexican Embassy has
extended an invitation to a hundred primary
school students from all over the country - for a trip to visit the new
Yook'ol Kaab Planetarium and the Museum of the Mayan Culture in
Chetumal.
These one hundred students must be exemplary both academically and in their behavior at school. The trip is aimed at giving these youngsters an opportunity to expand their knowledge in astronomy and the Mayan culture. Mexico's Ambassador to Belize, Mario Velasquez told us more:
Mario Velasquez, Mexico's
Ambas sador to Belize
"This initiative appeared at the moment by the governor of Quintana Roo. He invited me for the opening of this planetarium. It's the first one in Chetumal. The best we can do is to bring students; it's an award for them. It going to be marvelous. When I was a child I would have like this opportunity. When you see the planetarium for the first time - it's incredible to see the universe, to see it very close. To see the planets with a telescope its marvelous. They will have special glasses to seeing the universe during the day. The Mexican transportation will be here, the autobus have air condition, bathroom and of course teachers will be with the children, they won't be alone. The parents can be assure that their children will be in very good hands because we will have nurses on the autobus if whatever happen. Sometimes when you travel you get dizzy; we will have everything for that. In Mexico they will go to the museum of the Maya culture and they will have meals. The chamber of Commerce in Chetumal will take care of them. They are preparing special Mexican meals for the children. Everybody in Chetumal is waiting in open arms to receive the Belizean children and we are encouraging the schools to send us their information as soon as possible because we will be closed." The trip will be held on Thursday December 15th. ADO buses from Mexico will be transporting the students to and from Chetumal. The Embassy is still receiving applications. All schools in Belize are encouraged to nominate their best students born between 1998 and 2001 in order to participate in the selection process. Schools can contact the Mexican Embassy at 223-1408, 223-0193 or 223-0194. Mexican Immigration in Chetumal has announced that it will facilitate the crossing of the Belizean students across the Mexican border - and they won't even have to pay the 10 dollar mordida! CH7 World Aids Day Observed: Infection Rate In
Bze
Going Down
World AIDS Day is being celebrated today,
and since 1988, the day
has always been set aside for the purposes of raising funds, increasing
awareness, fighting prejudice and educating the public about the deadly
disease.
But just as important, the day is used for reminding people that HIV has not gone away, and there's still much left to be done. The vast majority of people living with HIV and AIDS come from low and middle income countries such as Belize, but the disease remains a threat to men women and children on all continents.
Worldwide, there's been a
significant decline in the estimated
number of AIDS related deaths over the last five years. In Belize,
health officials and those dedicated to fighting the deadly disease
were being cautiously optimistic about the country's declining rate of
infection, at a press conference held today at ITVET.
Dr. Martin Cuellar, Executive Director of the National Aids Commission "We are very happy to report this year that we had some continued progress which started over three years ago. We continue to see a decreased in the number of new infections and this tells us that the combined initiatives that we've been implementing with all of our partners in preventing are starting to take hold and starting to create a positive effect." Jim McFadzean "As we celebrate World Aids Day there are still this call for more education and awareness. Why so?"
Dr. Martin Cuellar
SAN PEDRO TOWN"It's very important that though we are seeing a decrease in the number of new infections that we don't run away with the misconception that the problem is over or that we have nothing to be concern about and so it is important that we take our approach to prevention to a new level and I think the new level that we need to talk about in Belize is a more personal one. we are asking Belizeans to each look into their own lives, asses the level of risk in their sexual behavior and to develop what we call a personal protection plan and if each individual starts doing that and then they seek motivation to stick to those plans within their smaller circles within families, within friends we will see the net effect rippling across our society, our communities and the around the country and it is this kind of combine personal initiative that would allow us to continue the new infections going down and allow us to truly take full control of HIV. " According to UNAIDS estimates, there are now 34 million people living with HIV. During 2010 some 2.7 million people became newly infected with the virus, including an estimated 390,000 children. In Belize an estimated 5 Thousand people are living with HIV. CH7 POLICE REPORT
