HAPPY NEW YEAR!
ENVIRONMENTAL GROUP FORMED ON AMBERGRIS CAYE A new environmental
advocacy group has been formed on Ambergris Caye with
an aim to protect its coastal resources. Public consultations will begin in the first week of January. Maria Novelo reporting “The newly formed Ambergris Caye Wetlands Committee is in the first stages of launching its conservation initiative for 2011 with its conceptual plan to acquire protected status for three areas on Ambergris Caye. The wetlands committee is comprised of the Ambergris Caye citizens for sustainable development, Hol Chan Marine Reserve, San Pedro Tour Guide Association, Green Reef and the business community partners. The aim is to conduct a public consultation process that will allow sustainable management of our coastal resources. In a press release from the Wetlands Committee, it stated the proposed sites for protected status including, Mexico Rocks Marine which comprises of 8.75 square miles, Bajos Proposed Marine Reserve spanning 135 square miles and Cayo Frances adjoining the Mata Frances Lagoon. While the committee’s spokesperson declined an interview, Love News understands that this was done so as to not confuse the public of their efforts without holding a proper public consultation to acquire the concerns from the residents in this municipality. While still in its conceptual stage, the release states that the paper was presented to the Minister of Tourism Manuel Heredia Junior on December 15th where it was reported that he was in support of the initiative. The release ended stating that the Minister is in the process of submitting the copies of the concept paper to the relevant Ministries for consultation. It has been agreed by all the parties involved that a Public consultation will be held on January 05, 2012 at the Lion’s Den at 6pm to present the concept paper to the local community for their input.” LoveFM Tropic Air to increase
airfare on January 1, 2012
The tariffs at
Tropic Air will increase effective January 1, 2012.
The announcement was made via the company’s press
release. According to Tropic Air the increase is
necessary due to the rise in fuel prices worldwide.
“These unprecedented and sustained high prices, which have doubled in the past 12 months, have left us no alternative but to follow our industry colleagues around the world, and implement a segment based fuel surcharge,” said the company statement. The company said that the increase in fuel prices has been hard-hitting on airlines similar to Tropic Air that consume large quantities of aviation fuel. The new cost for round trip tickets (Adults) from San Pedro to other destination are as follows: Caye Caulker $163; Corozal: $216; Sarteneja: $216, Tower Hill, Orange Walk: $216; Belize Municipal: $163 and Belize International: $282.50. The prices include Rider’s Fee of $5.00. Tropic Air says that if the company sees sustained lower fuel costs, they will be sure to pass those savings onto their customers. They warned however that further increases may be necessary if fuel prices continue to rise. “We cannot make up those increases in other areas. We do promise you that, as an airline, we always endeavor to give you the best value for money. We will be sure to issue guidance to you in any eventuality,” said Tropic Air. Announces 2012 Honourees
Press Release –
Office of the Governor- General – Belmopan
Friday 30th December 2011 – In a news release
from Belize House in Belmopan, the Office of the
Governor-General announces that Her Majesty the
Queen has been graciously pleased to make the
following appointments to the MOST
EXCELLENT ORDER OF THE BRITISH EMPIRE on the
occasion of NEW YEAR HONOURS 2012:
ACES earns
Verification from GFA Sanctuaries
The
American Crocodile Education Sanctuary
recently earned Verification status from the
Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries. The
announcement was made in a correspondence
from GFAS on December 19, 2011.
In the correspondence, it was stated that “the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries is honored to announce that the American Crocodile Education Sanctuary in Belize has achieved GFAS Verification. This is the fourth sanctuary to be recognized in Central America, and the first in Belize.” A site visit was conducted by veterinarian Isabelle Paquet-Durand a few months ago, who provided a comprehensive report to GFAS. Robin Mason, Accreditation Manager for GFAS stated in reference to ACES that, “it is so wonderful to see this sanctuary recover from the intentionally-set fire last fall, which resulted in the total loss of the former ACES facility in Toledo District of Belize, as well as in the tragic loss of crocodiles.” The GFAS Verification means that ACES meets the comprehensive and rigorous definition of a true sanctuary that is providing humane and responsible care of the crocodiles. ACES meets thorough and peer-reviewed standards established by GFAS, which is the only globally recognized organization providing standards for identifying legitimate animal sanctuaries and rescue centers. The verification status also provides a clear and trusted means for the public, donors worldwide and government agencies to recognize ACES as an organization that is worthy of support for continued growth and development. Co-founder and director of ACES Cherie Chenot-Rose commented, “This is huge for us. We’re very proud to receive this very prestigious accreditation. It means that we are meeting standards set internationally, that the quality of our facility has met superior standards. At ACES, our facility is constructed in a way to ensure that the animals are being kept in the most humane way possible and that the best interest and welfare for their health is being maintained.” With the recognition from GFAS, more international funding will become available to ACES. Chenot-Rose stated, “Having this will definitely open up more funding opportunities for our facility. We would very much like to construct a facility such as the one in Ladyville here on the island but the land is just not available.” The new ACES facility that was accredited is located in Ladyville Village in the Belize District. ACES is dedicated to the conservation and protection of Belize’s critical wetland habitats, specifically crocodilians, through scientific research and education in order to preserve Belize’s wildlife for future generations.
