A burglary in San
Pedro Town has resulted in the theft of just under six
thousand dollars in cash. The incident happened over
the weekend at the Super Buy Store in the San Pedrito
area. The manger of the establishment told police that
she became aware of the burglary on Sunday morning.
Five thousand, eight hundred and ninety two dollars
and five cents was stolen by the thief or thieves.
Investigations by police show that entrance to the

and removing three louvers from a small window. San
Pedro police have three men in custody pending the
outcome of their investigations.
LoveFM Ailing Hawksbill Turtle
being treated in San Pedro
A 65.2lbs Hawksbill
Sea Turtle is currently is the care of Marine
Biologist, Kirah Forman at the San Pedro Hol Chan
Office. On Wednesday, January 25th a little boy down
in Hopkins caught the trapped Hawksbill Turtle (the
most endangered sea turtle in the Caribbean and on
the IUCN Red List (International Union for the
Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources) that
was very weak and wasn’t doing very well.
According to Forman, the young man brought the turtle to safety and contacted the fisheries officer in Hopkins, who later contacted the San Pedro Hol Chan office. Hol Chan made arrangements to have the turtle brought to its facility where it is currently receiving treatment. Forman stated, “The Hawksbill turtles are endangered throughout the world and are on the IUCN’s red list – a list of all endangered species; and has been protected for several years here in Belize along with the other sea turtles. Over the past years, conservation groups have been working on getting the number of these turtles up so – if we are able to help one survive, and it’s also a female, it is very important.” Apart from being very weak, the turtle had many barnacles on its shell and showed signs of a compromised immune system. At the Hol Chan office, the turtle measuring 68 centimeters in length, is receiving treatment such as antibiotics and vitamins in an attempt to nurture it back to good health. The turtle will be kept here on the island for a few weeks, and once it has completely recuperated, will be tagged and released. The San Pedro SAGA society is assisting the Hol Chan office in providing medications as well as veterinary services to the sick turtle. The general public is advised that sightings of any stranded sea turtle should be reported immediately to the fisheries department or the Hol Chan Office at telephone number 226-2247. San Pedro Sun SP AIDS Commission
Expense Report The San Pedro
AIDS Commission is one of the most active groups
on the island and since their inception they have
been working really hard in creating more
awareness on HIV/AIDS on the island.
In July 26, 2011 the San Pedro Aids Commission presented to the public a financial report which was from January 1 to June 31, 2011 which stated in details their expenditures which totaled to $7,383.46. The group is once more pleased to make public their most recent details on how they are spending its funds and distributing assistance to those in need. San Pedro Aids Commission Expenses as of July 1st to December 31st, 2011: *Donations to AIDS Patients - $4,950.00 - majority of the funds raised goes towards monetary donations for HIV positive patients. Stipends are delivered to these patients depending on their needs and specific cases. *Medical Expenses (Vitamins, etc) - $434.30 - Although the Government of Belize does provide free antiretroviral treatment for HIV/AIDS patients in the country, there is still more that patients need to keep up with their health, and thus the SP AIDS Commission provides patients with additional vitamins and medication. *Information Campaign Expenses - $1,736.70 – Education is vital and thus the group spends on the making of fliers, videos and painting of murals . ** Overall expenses for the last six months - $7,121.00 “I would like to thank the entire San Pedro community for their support,” stated Mr. Felix Ayuso. “Thank you to all residents and businesses that support us. And a special thank you to all members for your arduous work on all our fundraising events.” Mr. Ayuso also announced that coming again very soon is the San Pedro AIDS Commission participation in the Carnaval Comparsas and the Noche de las Estrellas on which is set for Saturday, April 7, 2012 (Holy Saturday). The San Pedro AIDS Commission would like to make mention that they meet every first Wednesday of the month at 6:00 p.m. at the Holiday Hotel. Interested persons wishing to join are most welcomed as well as any assistance (donations) is also appreciated. For more information contact chairman Felix Ayuso at 663-9922. Ambergris Today NDACC Seeks
Assistance from San Pedro Community
The National
Drug Abuse Control Council, NDACC, has two
officers responsible for Belize Rural South;
namely, Ms. Kristina Romero, Drug Educator and
Ms. Joyce Eliis, Outreach Caseworker.
Although, they do not have an office on the
island as yet, they are very much committed to
helping the residents of San Pedro.
During the past year, they have both visited the schools and assisted them in Drug Prevention Education as well as counseling when it was deemed necessary. However, their work doesn’t end there; and they are now asking the San Pedro community to assist them in making this island as drug-free for our children as possible. “As we socialize, we hear that our children of today are going down the wrong path, or that the alcohol and other drugs are taking over our children,” commented Kristina Romero, District Coordinator, NDACC, Ministry of Health. “But what are we doing to assuage the situation? As the old saying goes, “It takes a village to raise a child” so we must come together to help our youth realize that there is a time and place for everything in life.” “We are asking for your assistance in making reports to the proper authorities when you see young children buying alcohol or tobacco at stores, or make reports when you see them at nightclubs and bars. Many a times, we talk about it in our cliques but we don’t do anything about it. Parents, businesses, teachers, principals, community on a whole, if we don’t do something about these instances we will end up with a much higher rate of alcoholics and drug abusers on our island.” “NDACC is here to help as much as we can but we can only do so much… We ask school principals to call us for Drug Education presentations. Please do not wait until situations are out of control to contact us and then expect us to do the impossible. Work with us on a daily basis and although we don’t have offices here, we do come to the island when a school requests us for events. With this said, we thank everyone who has been working alongside us since the beginning of our assignment here in April of 2011.” For more information on services offered, you can contact us at 227-0528 or ndaccbze@gmail.com.
