One dead, one critical in
San Pedro murder/suicide attempt San Pedro police are investigating a
shooting incident that has left
one resident dead and another seriously injured. Authorities are still
not sure how the case will be treated because just what led up to the
drama is shrouded in mystery. According to reports, around midday
sixty-six year old William Douglas Campbell, a U.S. citizen, shot his
caretaker: thirty-nine year old Danielo Villatoro. Campbell then
allegedly turned the gun on himself and pulled the trigger. More
8th Bank Inaugurated The
San
Pedro branch opening of the First Caribbean International Bank took
place this weekend on Sunday, January 28, 2006 making San Pedro one of
the only communities to boast of having a branch of every banking
business established in this country. There are much bigger
towns and communities in Belize that are much larger in size and
population than San Pedro, but our island community can now be proud to
boast of this. MoreO.A.S. helps ease tensions at
Guatemalan border Thanks to a well oiled O.A.S. publicity
machine and unprecedented
cooperation between the Belizean and Guatemalan military forces, there
has been no shortage of press reports on the latest round of
"confidence building measures" at the border. But beyond the hype,
those measures are not only building confidence but also helping solve
some very real problems that continue to plague the frontier. More
Schoolchildren Get Free Dental Checkup More than one hundred
San Pedro children were given the wonderful opportunity to have a
healthier smile this past week during a free dental hygiene clinic
conducted by a team of dentists, dental hygienists, and assistants at
the San Pedro Polyclinic II. The medical team from Minnesota, U.S.A.,
led by Dr. Mark Johnson, provided dental services to schoolchildren
from the New Horizons Seventh Day Adventist School last week Wednesday,
with many more treated from other area schools this week. More
Free programs offered to youths
Last Saturday, January 28th, an open house
was held for
San Pedro
youths, giving them the opportunity to enroll in a new arts program
that will be launched on the island. Youths between the ages of 7 to 21
years of age may still choose from a long list of fun subjects in the
arts in order to keep themselves proactive with their spare time. MoreRegional fund for July launch There is much optimism for the
launch by
July of a Regional
Development Fund (RDF) with a minimum US$50 million, most of it coming
from the government of Trinidad and Tobago.
That optimistic note has been signalled by more than one Prime Minister of the Eastern Caribbean following the special meeting of the Community's Finance Ministers last Tuesday in Kingston, Jamaica. More Student thinks locally, acts globally
Ilana Pearlman found a new twist to put on
an old adage, and found that it works."They
say 'Think globally, act locally,' but I don't believe that since I got
home," she said. "I think it should be reversed: think locally, act
globally. Start with environmental awareness. It serves the world
better to know the land in (people's) own countries, and bring that to
everything else. It makes more of an impact."Shortly
after Christmas, Pearlman got home from the place and experiences that
got her started on thinking that way: Belize, where she spent more than
six months in an environmental program with The Cornerstone Foundation.
She taught organic farming to children. More
