American Still Critical After San Pedro Double Shooting

Police have still not been able to question William Douglas Campbell, the 66-year-old American who was found with a gunshot wound just after noon yesterday near his residence in the Tres Cocos area north of San Pedro Town. He remains in critical condition at the KHMH. He was shot the left side of the chest which punctured his lung and injured his heart. While doctors expect Campbell to live, his caretaker 39-year-old Honduran national Danilo Villatoro was found dead outside the Tres Cocos home; he had been shot to the left temple. More

Bring back hanging
“... Join me in calling for the re-institution of capital punishment so that those convicted for these senseless murders will be made to pay the price for their actions, says Commissioner of Police Gerald Westby.“We will work vigorously with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions to address the problem of repeat offenders. We will reduce crime and violence in this country or we will die trying.”Reporter notes that although the capital punishment law is still on the books, no Commissioner of Police in recent memory has so publicly called on the state to administer the sentence of death on those guilty of senseless murders. GOB Still Paying Godfrey's Bills
Earlier this week we showed that last year government paid US$2.4 million last year for Intelco phone services when there are no services being provided. It's a burden taxpayers bear for Glenn Godfrey and government's costly telecom experiment. But that's not the end of the bill that taxpayers must pay to cover Godfrey's bad debts. More

How Food and Fuel Compete for Land
Historically, the world’s farmers produced food, feed and fiber. Today, they are starting to produce fuel as well. Since nearly everything we eat can be converted into automotive fuel, the high price of oil is becoming the support price for farm products. It is also determining the price of food. On any given day, there are now two groups of buyers in world commodity markets: one representing food processors and another representing biofuel producers. The line between the food and fuel economies has suddenly blurred as service stations compete with supermarkets for the same commodities. More

British ships net £350m
Caribbean drugs haul

A high-speed sunset swoop involving ships from the Royal Navy and Royal Fleet Auxiliary netted cocaine with a UK street value of £350 million. Defence Secretary John Reid said: "This is another great success for the Royal Navy in countering the trafficking of illegal drugs, which destroy the lives of families in the United Kingdom and around the world. "The professional crews of HMS Southampton and RFA Grey Rover deserve huge credit for dealing another massive blow to the drug barons that would attack our society." More

News Tips
Here's my news tip! I read all of the on line news from Belize and because the Guardian and Belize Times is party papers I tend to read between the lines to get a sense of what really is and is not. Party politics is nothing new and opposite views and ideas is expected and encouraged. This keeps the Government of the day on their toes and promotes democracy. The vile comments and inuendo that seems to have taken over in almost anything that is printed in the Belize Times has made me stop reading. Whomever is writing this stuff should have their mouth washed out with soap (as my dear mother would say, and do). The adolesent verbal attack on Mr. John August was both uncalled for and inconcianable. He should be held up as an example of what the youth of Belize should strive to be. One should be able to disagree with ones politics without resorting to vile name calling. I hope the editorial content will change so that I can once again read what the sensible supporters of the PUP have to say.
