Bacalar Chico gets cleaned up!
The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef
System (MBRS) stretches from the tip of
the Yucatán Peninsula down to the Bay Islands of Honduras; this
reef
structure is the largest coral reef in the Western Hemisphere, the
second largest coral reef in the world.
On March 10th, 2007, representatives from Hol Chan Marine Reserve, Bacalar Chico Marine Reserve and National Park, as well as volunteers rode up to Bacalar for a half day beach cleanup in honor of MBRS Day. Leaving San Pedro at 8:00 a.m., the group arrived at the Northern tip of Ambergris Caye armed with gloves, garbage bags, sunscreen and water ready to take up the task at hand. Walking to the site, the cleanup crew was surprised to see that garbage extended as far as the eye could see. The group concentrated on Robles Point as their area of cleanup. Alicia Eck, Bacalar Chico Manager commented that that particular site needed to be cleaned up because the turtle nesting season was about to commence. “We don’t want our turtles to get stuck in garbage when attempting to crawl up the beach and lay their eggs,” she stated, “we want to just prepare the beach a little bit for them because they have a hard time getting in, climbing all the way up. Sometimes they go into the bushes and they dig and they lay their eggs. To facilitate them coming up, to make it easier for them, we try to do a cleanup every year. […] last year on this beach alone we had nineteen [nests]. It was split between the green turtles and the loggerheads and between the two beaches, the Rocky Point Beach and the Robles Point Beach, we had a total of thirty nests. Eleven were found on the other one, on the other beach. We also had, which is rare, but we’re seeing it more every year is two Hawksbill nests.” Read More Child Stimulation Month continues...
As part of
Child Stimulation Month, pre-schools around the country are holding
various activities in conjunction with the community. In San Pedro, the
ABC Pre-School enjoyed a day of “dress up.” Students arrived at school
attired in various ethnic costumes such as Mennonites, Japanese, Mayas,
Mestizos and Indians. Throughout the week, they were taught the
important role each ethnicity plays in the community. Of importance was
the fact that they were taught that the country is made up of many
cultures working together.
On Friday, ABC Pre-School, Little Angels Pre-School and San Pedro Pre-School all got together for a fun day under the sun. All three schools took part in various games and activities that students, teachers and parents enjoyed immensely. Kids hopping in sacks, relay racing and football were seen throughout the Old Football Field. However, Child Stimulation Month covers so much more. Students of ABC enjoyed the company of Mrs. Marthita Leslie who was one of the special guests. She taught students about manners, civic pride and courtesy. Present also was Manuel Ancona who explained the importance of nutrition to the students and later shared delicious, juicy grapes with them. Read More Penalties
for Domestic Violence Will Be Stiffer, says A.G. Francis Fonseca
![]() The
Domestic Violence Bill 2007 will introduce stiffer criminal penalties
and increase the offences which constitute an act of domestic violence,
said Attorney General Hon. Francis Fonseca as he spoke at the Women’s
Summit, held last week Thursday, March 8th. The
Attorney General was a guest speaker at the 2nd Annual Women’s Summit
where he was invited to speak about the Domestic Violence Bill 2007 and
its proposed changes.
“The Domestic Violence Act 2007 will signal a policy of zero tolerance for Domestic Violence,” stated Hon. Fonseca. Hon. Fonseca challenged the judicial system, police department and counselor and support service officers to fully appreciate the purpose of the new Bill and to ensure that it benefits Belizeans. “Legislation can be rendered meaningless if our institutions and citizens do not give meaningful effect and support to that legislation,” he said.
