Tourist
Says,
“Don’t Let Down Your Guard”
Jon Berg, an American Tourist
who was vacationing on Caye Caulker
made the media rounds across Belize City to say that he was brutally
assaulted on Caye Caulker.
Berge, who has travelled the world says he knows he broke the tourist safety rules, but also wants to send the word out that those rules do stringently apply - even on La Isla Carinosa:…
Jon Berg, terrorized tourist
Taking pictures of the moon and the clouds and video movie with my camera here and all of a sudden I became aware of two men behind me, it was 11:05 in the night and it was very violent, all of a sudden they went like this (head lock) the classic mugging and I said to myself that it finally happen, I've been to 45 countries around the world and it finally happen. They went with my camera and my wallet but they didn't get any money or anything but the gentleman had his hand on my wrist and as I pulled away and yelled somehow I broke my wrist that way, both bones broken. The tourist are just totally unsuspecting there, they are like very naive. They think that it's not Belize City - everyone know Belize City you got to be careful, even Belizeans, but they don't expect that in Caye Caulker you have to be that careful. I was careless, i am an experience international traveller, I've been 45 countries around the world. My passport shows it and I was careless, I was taking pictures, focusing on the moon and the trees and I shouldn't have been doing that in the dark area, it was very dark at that time of night. I broke all the rules of international travel and that why allowed these two guys to take advantage of the situation and hurt me." Jules Vasquez "Why do you feel it necessary to come forward?"

tourist
"Well people encourage me, people on Caye Caulker and I feel terrible about doing this in some ways because i am going to hurt people who are working hard to make a living. People saw me at the restaurant with the arm up like this and they are saying 'what happen to you?' and I say I was attack and then almost always it was funny and they said 'by what?' and they think it's a cat or a dog, one person said a shark. Then when I said a human being, they almost couldn't believe it. They say here and they were like shock because they don't believe that Caye Caulker is that kind of place. Obviously neither did I. Yes you have to be careful everywhere - I broke the rules." Berg made a police report, and police did promptly detain two men, but they could not be charged because he could not make a positive identification. CH7 Preschoolers
Parade for Child Stimulation Month
![]() For the past twenty-seven
years, preschoolers have marked
the beginning of March with a parade through the streets, promoting
early childhood educatio n. Today that tradition continued countrywide,
as the activities for Child Stimulation Month got underway. The events
planned for the next thirty days are tailored to encourage parents, not
only to enroll their children in pre-school, but to actively support
them in that important period of development. Delda Blades Franklin,
the Preschool Officer in the Ministry of Education, gave News Five a
rundown of what’s coming up this month.
Delda Blades Franklin, Preschool Officer, Ministry of Education “Child Stimulation Month is celebrated every year in the month of March. We want to create awareness in the general public so people can know the importance of sending their pre-school aged children to pre-school. It is very important that at a very young age our children be stimulated since that is the time in the child’s life when the brain is rapidly developing.” ![]() Delahnie Bain
“Can you tell us about the events that you have planned this year?” Delda Blades “It started with a church service; each school had church services and then today, which is the first of March, this parade is being done throughout the country: Corozal to P.G., west and also in the cayes.” Delahnie Bain “Anything else coming up after today?” Delda Blades “Yes, we have a number of activities. We have a number of activities. We have some days that we call special days like culture day, hug day, flag day and we also have the pre-school children’s festival of arts, which begins the fourteenth of this month and it runs through the nineteenth.” ![]() Delahnie Bain
“Over the years celebrating Child Stimulation Month, do you think that it has been effective? Have there been more children coming to pre-school?” Delda Blades “Oh yes. I think that many more parents are aware of the importance and they send their children to pre-school. We also have a number of new pre-schools that have opened its doors throughout the years. We just want to ask parents to support the child’s pre-school and to be a part of all the activities that they can because it is very important for the parents to support the children, especially at this age.” The month of activities will close with a rally at Bird’s Isle.
