National Women's Commission preparing women to enter parliament
The
National Women's Commission (NWC) of Belize is preparing women to
enter frontline politics and possibly to be members of parliament.
Twenty-two women graduated on Thursday from the Women in Politics Project following a five month course in political and other activities designed to prepare them to be leaders. Executive Director of the NWC Anne Marie Williams said that the programme provided the participants with an opportunity to run for politics, be it the village council, town, municipal or national level. There is no female in Belize Parliament, but it is expected that this will change at the next general elections. The mayor of the city of Belize is a woman, and the NWC is hopeful to get at least thirty percent of women in Parliament in keeping with the recommendations that the Canadian International Development Agency gave to Belize as part of its third and fourth period report in 2007. Caribbean News Net UN-backed test shows need to improve
Caribbean tsunami warning system
The
first full-scale test of the tsunami
warning system in the Caribbean has highlighted the need to reinforce
preparations as well as improve communication, evacuation plans and the
role of the private sector, the United Nations said today.
The simulated tsunami alert, dubbed Caribe Wave 2011, was carried out on 23 March and involved 34 countries. Under the test scenario, a 7.6-magnitude earthquake was signaled off the coast of the Virgin Islands, which generated a tsunami with waves reaching of up to ten metres. The exercise tested the Tsunami and Other Coastal Hazards Warning System for the Caribbean and Adjacent Regions (Caribe EWS), which was set up in 2005 under the aegis of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). "The exercise highlighted a number of gaps in the transmission of information," UNESCO stated in a news release, noting that in several areas, the message was not received by the Global Telecommunications System (GTS). In other cases, reception of messages via the Emergency Managers Weather Information Network (EMWIN) failed. At national level only a few mobile telephone operators joined the exercise. Populations and media throughout the region keenly followed the exercise, which also allowed for an evaluation of evacuation plans and the role of the private sector in the case of a catastrophe, the agency added. "I am delighted with the level of participation in this exercise and the interest that has been shown by local populations," said UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova. "Such drills are essential to evaluate the efficiency of warning systems and ensure their efficient operation when catastrophe strikes." Similar exercises have been held in the Pacific (2008) and Indian Ocean (2009) regions. UN News Getting
Principals From The Office Into The Classroom
25
Principals from Belize City Schools received training at a four
day workshop called The Principal as an Instructional Leader. The idea
is to get the principal engaged, not just in the administration of the
school, but in its day to day operation - and the principal of Ebenezer
Primary told us what he learned.
Marvin Kellyman, Principal
"I learnt so many things this week and one mistake you can make as a leader is that if you think you know everything when you fail, then you will definitely fail. So what I learn this week is that there are so many models of being a leader and we need to tap into all of these models to make sure that we do the best job we can as a leader."
Carol Babb
"We've all grown up in Belize where we find that the leader - the principal was almost always present in the office. We are trying to train principals to become leaders rather than managers. Managers take care of duties like if a window is broken and this and that. We are trying to make sure that our leaders become instructional leaders."
Hon. Patrick Faber,
Minister of Education
"This is an instructional leader's workshop and it is saying 'you know what, being the leader of a school requires more than your administrative duties. It requires even more than just your educational duties. It requires you to make decisions utilizing the resources that are around you and it also entails understanding where your teachers are coming from. We are trying to encourage principals to use the kind of strategies in their schools that will see the teachers be a part of the decision making processes and make sure they feel that they are a part of the whole system." The training for principals will roll out to the rest of the country and in a new development, the IDB has committed one million US dollars to assist with teacher education. CH7 Notices
