MINISTER MANUEL HEREDIA RESPONDS TO
ISLANDERS’ CONCERNS
A mother lost her child on
Ambergris Caye on Thursday due to
the
lack of proper and adequate health facility and transportation off the
island. The issue has caused uproar amongst the island’s population and
today the Area Representative met with media on the island.
Jorge Aldana reporting. “In a knitted community like San Pedro Town, where everyone practically knows everyone, what affects one family affects the community. Such was the case when a mother lost her unborn child due to the lack of a proper and adequate health facility on Ambergris Caye. It’s another wake-up call for the elected officials and today, that was the sentiment that dominated the local airwaves. It’s a situation that needs urgent attention. In an early morning press conference Area Representative Manuel Heredia lamented the incident and said that he is prepared to take the matter once more to Cabinet to avoid such occurrences to ever happen again. Manuel Heredia – Area Representative, Belize Rural South “It is my duty to really look into the matter because I can recall that when BATSUB had announced that it would be leaving Belize we knew that there will be problems if we did not have their assistance and I can recall that it was mentioned in Cabinet and that we were going to look into the possibilities at what other arrangements can be made not only for San Pedro and Caye Caulker but also down south which is remote areas of the south. I feel that steps are being taken. I do not know, but I will speak to the Minister responsible for Health and Defence and see what is the latest on that because if that is the case then something urgent needs to be done so this type of incident not to occur again. Any life that is lost is something serious. San Pedro is a very united community and when an incident of this nature happens it is the talk of the island and it truly hurts everybody including myself. Whoever loses a child particularly in this manner, probably if it is for transportation or inadequate equipment then I have to make sure that I look seriously into both areas, better facility which I am sure by July we can have extended hours. I think it will be more doctors, more nurses. If we have difficulty trying to get air lift services then our duty is to make sure that we do everything we can to equip our local poly clinic to the extent, probably upgrade it to a hospital because we are isolated from any other area, it is a big town, and we are becoming one of the biggest. We should be given the priority and the assistance that we deserve." Again Minister Heredia assured the island residents that he will take the matter to the next Cabinet meeting for urgent attention. Belize
Population
Over 300 Thousand
The first confirmed data from
the Belize 2010 Census released
today
shows that the population of Belize is now estimated to be at over
three hundred and twelve thousand compared to the figure of two hundred
and forty thousand in the year 2000. This indicates an annual growth
rate of 2.65% with the most significant gains being made by the Latino
population that now makes up slightly over 51% of Belize’s population.
The second highest population, the Creoles, lost ground going from 25%
in the 2000 census down to 22% in 2010.
Preliminary figures released today in a presentation by the Statistical Institute of Belize at a presentation at the University of Belize in Belmopan also show some interesting figures long suspected by economists. The most unsettling data is the unemployment rate in Belize. At the most recent meeting of the House of Representatives last month during the budget debate, the Belize government had refused to release unemployment figures. Well today the figure is out – a staggering 23% of the Belize work force is unemployed, up from the 20% rate of unemployment reported in 2000. This can no longer be ignored as a major factor contributing to the increased levels of crime in Belize according to comments today in leading Belize newspapers. Other data released today by Director General of the Statistical Institute of Belize Glenn Avilez: The ratio of men to women in Belize is now one to one. The median age in Belize remains unchanged at 21. There is no significant change in the distribution of population throughout Belize. The Belize District continues to lead as the largest population center, followed by the Cayo District. The highest growth of population has taken place on Ambergris Caye where the population has exploded from 4,400 in 2000, to 11,000 in 2010. More startling is that the number of Belizeans who say they do not belong to any religious group has gone up from 9% to 15%. The Roman Catholic faith continues to be the largest in Belize. The fastest growing religious group in Belize are the Pentecostals. Belizean.com Notices &

The speech topic is ‘Kindness in Our Community’. Lions Club members will vote for the best speech and the winner will receive a brand new bicycle. The children will be required to include answers to several important questions in their speech including: Why is kindness important? Why do some people or animals not receive much kindness? How can kindness change lives? And – What could be done to make San Pedro a kinder place? They will be judged on their presentation skills and creativity.
