San Pedro resident killed
It started as a pre-dawn fist fight and
hours later a twenty-nine
year old employee of a San Pedro Hotel was dead. It is suspected that
it
had to do with a pending debt and the cops are still investigating
Saturday’s killing. But one man has been charged with manslaughter.
Marion Ali was in San Pedro and has this report.
Marion Ali, Reporting This is the spot on this unnamed street in the San Pedrito Area where twenty-nine year old Alejandro Uk was picked up by police shortly after one on Saturday morning. He had been badly beaten and some say he was thrown over the veranda of a two-storey building during a confrontation. Sgt. Paulino Reyes, O.C., C.I.B., San Pedro “Mr. Uk had gone to the room of one Enrique Pena for some undetermined reason up to now and he engaged in a physical confrontation with Mr. Pena. They engaged in a wrestle and fist throwing struggle.” But when police arrived at the scene it was dark because there was a countrywide power outage and all they observed were minor facial injuries, but Uk later died at the San Pedro Lion’s Clinic. Sgt. Paulino Reyes “Mr. Uk did not present any signs of injury apart from a bleeding upper lip, so the only reason why he was taken to the clinic for medical attention was because he complained of pain. Externally we didn’t observe any signs of injury on him.” Marion Ali “So you believe that his death was caused by maybe a punch?” Sgt. Paulino Reyes “We are waiting on the results of the post mortem examination.” Police say that Uk and a friend went to this house where Enrique Pena lived and that was where the struggle started between Uk and Pena. It ended up on the street in front of Pena’s house where police found Uk. Sgt. Paulino Reyes “According to Mr. Pena, Mr. Uk just attacked him for no apparent reason and he tried to defend himself. There are at least four witnesses that are corroborating with Mr. Pena’s story.” Marion Ali “Including the guy who went with Mr. Uk?” Sgt. Paulino Reyes “Including him, yes.” But while that may be the case, sources who did not want to appear on camera told News Five that Pena had owed Uk money which he was trying to collect. And while police cannot confirm reports that Uk was flung over the veranda, they have charged Pena with Manslaughter. Joan Johnson, Manager, Conch Shell Hotel “I heard that it is a conflict regarding money owed to him somewhere in San Pedrito area and that he—it’s a very sad story that he was just beaten up.” It’s a death that has touched the owners of Conch Shell Hotel where Uk lived and worked as the Manager. Joan Johnson “He’s done a fabulous job. I’ve gotten many, many compliments from many, many of our guests who will be very saddened to hear. He was fabulous. I have guests that are planning on coming back just to stay with Alex cause he did such a fine job for them.” Uk had been socialising the night before and was preparing to celebrate his brother’s birthday on Sunday. That was reportedly why he had gone looking for Pena for repayment. Reporting fro News Five, Marion Ali. Meanwhile a three hundred dollar reward is being offered by the Conch Shell Hotel for the return of the hotel keys which were in the possession of Uk. CH5 Police Station gets facelift
![]() Have you passed by the police station and
noticed the bright colors in
the building? The San Pedro Police Station has been undergoing a
facelift both inside and outside. Sgt. Paulino
Reyes stated that there was enough money in the police budget for the
much needed renovations and so police officers have volunteered their
time to paint the building in bright yellow and green.
![]() “The police station is undergoing some
changes the plan was to remodel
inside the station and to fix up the counter,” commented Reyes. “But
not only was the counter changed, a small office was built so that
police can record statements in a more private manner and not have
everyone at the station listening to what is happening”
![]() But that is not all the changes, lockers are
going to be built so that
officers can place their personal belongings while at work and for the
station to look in a more orderly manner.Ambergris Today
BEL: Expect More
Blackouts
It’s been a record year for BEL: record
revenue of $176
million, a near record net loss of $10 million and this weekend it
seems like the company was going for another record, a record blackout.
It’s going to be tough, they’ve set the bar high, but on Friday night
into Saturday morning that record seemed within reach. There was a
national power outage at about 11:35 in the night and it wasn’t fully
restored until almost 5 am in some areas of the country. On Sunday in
Belize City power went out at about 2:30 in the afternoon and came back
around 5:23 in the evening.
So what caused it? Well, On Friday night, a ground wire broke away from a pole near the Buena Vista Substation and caused a fault on the transmission line between Mexico and Belize. The outage was extended because the Gas Turbine which usually kicks in to pick up the slack is down for maintenance for two weeks. So BEL had to turn to Belize Aquaculture Limited in the south to get power. And Sunday’s blackout was caused when a lightning arrestor failed during a lightning storm that passed over Belize City. Then there was a 40 minute outage in the Hattieville area on Sunday night. And this morning at 3:00 power was lost on the Southern Highway and it was not re\stored until 4:30 am. That was due to windblown trees falling across power lines. A rough spell, but it could get worse in the coming days as Mexico’s CFE have told BEL that on July 15, they may have to take out another one of their large generators for maintenance. This would make an already bad situation worse. It’s bad because as we told you Westlake which is the major diesel plant is out of commission for the time being. So starting on Wednesday the 15th, there could be outages.CH7 Pork Prices
Earlier today members of the Pig Council met
with Minister Rene Montero
and some of his senior staff to seek government’s support in assisting
pig producers to develop a strategy for increasing pork consumption
domestically. Since the scare of the HINI influenza pig and pork sales
have declined drastically.
Part of the strategy will include the reduction of the wholesale price for pigs from $1.90 to $1.75 per pound. Pork and processed pork products will also see a decrease in prices at the retail outlets and supermarkets. The public is reassured that the HINI virus is a human virus that does not affect pigs; therefore the consumption of pork does not pose any threat to humans.GOB Alejandro Uck
