Teachers take Primary Education Course
In May of this year, Minister of Education,
Hon.
Patrick Faber, visited the schools of San Pedro as part of his
countrywide tour to all schools. During his visit he promised teachers
to have workshops and programs for them to take here on the island
instead of having to travel to Belize City or other places. The
Ministry of Education, along with The University of Belize, is holding
a Primary Education Program for primary school teachers at the Holy
Cross Anglican School.
A total of 26 primary school teachers are taking the two year program with the comfort of being here on the island. Mrs. Ethnilda Paulino of University of Belize is the instructor for the first part of the course which will culminate next week.
The program consists of topics such as
Nature of
the Learner, Language Arts Methods for Primary School Teachers, Social
Studies Methods, among others. In speaking with teachers of the various
schools their general view about taking the program was the same; they
believe that the program will improve their way of teaching for the
betterment of the students and themselves.
“This program is great for us teachers as we get to become the students and experience what they go through on a daily basis,” commented Ms. Odelia of Ambergris Caye Elementary School. “I believe that the program enlightens our role as educators since children look at us as role models and it helps us to instill values to the children for them to become better students and for them to be someone important in the future.” To some teachers this is a great experience and an eye opener as some only have a year of teaching experience and taking the course will help them improve their teaching skills. The program is also being offered in Orange Walk, Belmopan, Belize City and Toledo. Teachers should receive their certificate in Primary Education in December 2010. Ambergris Today The Winners of
Mangrove Challenge
In April we told you about a contest, the
“Friendly Mangrove
Shoreline Development Challenge’ funded by the World Wildlife Fund to
help conserve our country’s mangroves. These mangroves, a necessary
part of the environment to prevent flooding and soil erosion, are being
cut down to make way for development all over the country.
Contestants were required to submit plans on incorporating mangroves into a landscape design and today, we found out who won. These winning layouts were all unique and demonstrated strategic ways of preserving mangroves. They were at Sunset Pointe condominiums in Placencia and Cocoplum Development in Seine Byte as well as Corozal Town and the Vidrine Residence in san Pedro. The winners were Jennifer Bond, Stewart Krohn, Craig Timmons, Tom Viridine, and the BTIA. Winners received certificates and a cash prize.CH7 Jaguar Man Will
Become UDP Senator
Omar Figueroa, you met him on this newscast
back in April
when he was trapping and tracking jaguars and pumas in the Belize
District. Well, he’s still a field biologist but instead of being
called the Jaguar Man, we’ll now have to call him the Honorable Jaguar
Man. That’s because Figueroa has been named the UDP Senator-designate
from the Cayo District
The vacancy comes up because Deborah Macmillan who has been the UDP Senator from the west for the last three years is leaving take up a post at a U.S. university. There were two possible names for the post, popular UDP friend Wilmot Simmons and Fiegueroa who is less known nationally but well respected in Cayo. The Prime Minister is expected to shortly advise the governor general to make the appointment. Figueroa’s ascension to the senate is seen as a major boost for the conservation movement. CH7 Obama nominee proud to be considered
to serve in Belize
US President, Barack Obama’s nominee as
Ambassador to Belize, Vinai
Thummalapally, says he is proud to be nominated as the first Indian
American to serve as United States' envoy to Belize. The Colorado-based
Indian American businessman, appearing today before the Senate Foreign
Relations Committee for his confirmation hearing, said he would work to
strengthen US interests in Belize, if confirmed. He noted that
recently, Belize played a constructive role at the Organisation of
American States, in addressing the political crisis in Honduras.
Thummalapally also said that approximately five thousand American
citizens live in Belize and that the US is home to the largest Belizean
community living outside Belize. If confirmed, the Ambassador designate
said he would look at ways to increase the effectiveness of programmes
that aim to strengthen Belize's domestic law enforcement and judicial
institutions. Thummalapally is a known supporter of President Obama who
raised funds for his presidential campaign. He is likely to be
confirmed and will then begin briefings before he heads to Belmopan. CH5
$200,000 Fleeced
from
Government Treasury
Close to two hundred thousand
dollars...that’s how much has
been discovered missing in an investigation into a theft at the
Treasury Department. Financial Secretary Joe Waight today confirmed
that there is no confirmed number at this time, because, new
discoveries continue to be made and he concluded, quote “it is a
growing figure above one hundred thousand (dollars) – where it will
reach I can’t say...every half day the news gets a little more
disturbing”
7 News has confirmed with the Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Dean Barrow that a second class clerk, Monica Escarpeta has been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation. Fin. Sec. Waight confirmed that initially she had been transferred, but she has now been suspended by the Public Services Commission. Waight says he expects that criminal charges will be brought shortly. But how does someone fleece hundreds of thousands of dollars from the public purse, right in the government treasury? Well, here’s how it worked. A person or persons in the treasury department would add phantoms to the pension rolls – issue fraudulent pension checques in their names and then direct those checques to an account at a commercial bank – where they would be deposited – and small withdrawals were made on a daily basis, apparently by someone working the scam from the outside. Waight confirmed that in some cases the names on the checques were those of legitimate pensioners, which makes it more than just misappropriation or theft, misuse of the names makes it fraud. But it’s not an over-night scam, not even over a year. Best information suggests it goes back as much as two years at least to 2007. And again, it seems to have been largely orchestrated from the desk of a second class clerk. Joe Waight surmises that different levels of authority were overly concentrated in the hands of one or two officers. He says the Financial Intelligence Unit, the Police Department and the Audit Department are investigating. And now arrests are pending in that case too: making it the third case this week where custodians of public funds are being investigated for missing public funds. I spoke to the Prime Minister today and he conceded that it creates a compelling image of corruption in government. Hon. Dean Barrow, Prime Minister “This is clearly a case of a public officer violating a public officer’s duty of trust and making away with public monies. To the extent that the system allowed that to happen, of course we have to look at the mechanisms that are in place and find out how this person could get away to the extent that the person got away with what she did. But it has happened, its regrettable, its yet another instance of something happening that puts us on the back foot in terms of the perception that’s growing that corruption is almost unstoppable in this country. I am greatly troubled by what has happened but all I can say at this point in response to it is that the person has been suspended, the matter has been turned over to the police, again I am sure that charges will be brought and the authorities, the officials, will be mandated and obliged to look at the system to see if this happened not just as a result of the dishonesty and ingenuity of the person who committed the theft but whether it was also because of or at least helped by some loopholes in the system but that’s a longer term exercise but I am sure it will be done.” Financial Secretary Joe Waight confirmed that the process of issuing pension cheques has already been tightened so that there are four persons responsible for issuing any one cheque.CH7 Butane Up By $5
Oil prices on the world market are falling
but in Belize, the
price of butane is rising. It was announced today but as of yesterday
Wednesday July 15th the price of a one hundred pound cylinder rose by
$5 across the board. So in Belize City the price jumped from $93 to
$98. The price is also $98 in Corozal. It is $99 in Orange Walk and
$100 in Belmopan and San Ignacio. That tank of butane is now $101 in
Benque and $102 in Dangriga and $103 in Punta Gorda.
Prime Minister Dean Barrow is quoted in today’s Guardian as saying he expects a sharp decrease in the price of gasoline shortly. Last week, the price of diesel jumped the $7 mark. CH7 LETTERS
