Celi Grief's Grief
Ask anyone who lives in Belize City, or any
other
municipality, for that matter, about something that their neighbour
does which really drives them crazy and you could get a thousand
complaints on every block. Whether it’s loud music, a business that
gobbles up all the neighbourhood parking, late night partying, an
un-kempt yard, or even noxious fumes from a standby generator – these
are the things that everyone has to live with and find a way to cope or
do our next best. But San Pedrana Celi Greif says, not her. She lives
in the heart of San Pedro Town right beside the biggest supermarket in
town. And now that supermarket is putting a generator just a few feet
form her window. And what makes her different is that she says she’s
going to challenge her neighbour using the law or even retaliatory
force if necessary. Here’s her story.
Keith Swift Reporting, Celi Grief’s grief is about this Caterpillar brand generator. It sits at the rear of the newly rebuilt Wing’s Department Store in San Pedro. Celi Grief lives at the back of the building – which puts her in the front of the generator. She says it is too close to her home for comfort.
Celi Grief, Unhappy with generator
“He is installing a generator that is going to be very noisy. It causes environmental problems. Maybe the gentleman has started and has gotten permission from the committee but what he is doing is obviously wrong. The noise is not going to be acceptable and he has other options of putting his generator on top of the roof to reduce the noise and that is my main concern.” Celi Grief says that the generator will cause noise pollution. Now that is understandable except that you have to consider that she lives near the airstrip and she is not complaining about the noise from that. Celi Grief, “I’ve lived in this area, my father’s building has been here about 36 years maybe.” Keith Swift, “And apart from the planes it is a normally quiet area?” Celi Grief, “Well yes apart from the airplanes and the usual noise the problem is that this is just recently being put.” Keith Swift, “It is going to be noise but we live around noise.” Celi Grief, “Well they are going to use it only when there is no electricity so you’re already going to be hot and then there is going to be the noise from it and this is diesel, the pollution and the noise is going to bounce from one wall to the next wall and it is just not acceptable. I think that the gentleman could easily put it up on top.” A manager at Wing’s told us off camera that the generator is enclosed and won’t cause noise or air pollution. But more than the store says and Celi Grief concedes that the project has gotten the green light from the island’s building authority. Celi Grief, “This one is just being put in. This gentleman, we here in Belize are complacent people, we don’t, we allow people to do things to us until its too late but that doesn’t mean that because I waited I don’t have the right. As a human being I have the right to defend my way of living. I was here before he was. It is not something that I moved into, it is something that he is erecting right now today as we speak.” There is one further complaint about the building’s proximity to the home of Francisca Graniel. Celi Grief, “We have apartments in front of us, we have apartments to the side, we have Belizean Reef – we have a community here and we don’t need more noise than we already have.” CH7 B.E.L. expects uninterrupted power
for a few days A release issued this afternoon by the
Belize Electricity Limited on
the status of power supply over the next few days was withdrawn within
minutes. And while B.E.L. is remaining mum on the long term situation
of the countrywide blackouts, it has confirmed that at least in the
next few days it can meet the power supply countrywide through
electricity from C.F.E. in Mexico, Belize Aquaculture Limited and
Belize Electric Company. That is as we said, for the next few days. CH5
H1N1 infections spread to twenty-two
The Ministry of Health is not calling it an
outbreak just yet, but
there are seven new confirmed cases of Influenza A H1N1 in Belize. This
brings the total number of infected persons to twenty-two. At least
three of the latest cases are from Cayo, while the others are in the
northern districts. The first fifteen positive results came from a
cluster of suspected cases sent from the Corozal Free Zone. So far none
of the infected persons have been hospitalized since the flu is no
longer considered as deadly as when it first came onto the scene.
According to information from the Central Health Region, a trend has
been noted in the most recent positive results; that is that there are
persons who recently travelled to neighboring Chetumal and others who
study in Mexico.
Also of note is that Thursday was Dr. Paul Edwards’ last day as the epidemiologist at the Ministry of Health. It has not yet been determined who will be taking his place but we can say that Edwards is heading to the Caribbean to take up a new job offer. CH5 M.O.U., signed; Dr. Fabro removed as
K.H.M.H. chairman
As we said earlier there is an agreement
between the Belize Medical
and Dental Union and the board of the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital.
The parties were locked down today with the labour commissioner, Ivan
Williams since nine-thirty this morning. They sweated it out along with
a newcomer to the mix, Senator Godwin Hulse. Hulse intervened on the
behalf of the B.M.D.U. and at six-thirty tonight, they were able to
sign a thirteen point memorandum that both groups could agree on. The
most important sticking point for the doctors was the removal of the
Chairman of the Board Doctor Ricardo Fabro. Before the ink dried on the
six copies that were signed, Fabro removed himself from his post for
the duration of the investigation and upcoming Commission of Inquiry.
Our team is just come back from the Biltmore and here is their report.
Ivan Williams, Labour Commissioner “I’m pleased to say that we have signed a joint memorandum of understanding between the B.M.D.U. and the K.H.M.H. and so the long stand off between the parties culminated in the signing of a memorandum of understanding.” Jose Sanchez “What were the significant parts that were different in regards to doctor Fabro?” Ivan Williams “With respect to Dr. Fabro, which is point four I believe on the M.O.U. Dr. Fabro has voluntarily, of his own free choice, removed himself from his duty as chairman of the board. He is doing so in the interest of the Belizean public, in reference to the institution and in terms of the services that need to be carried on in the institution.” Jose Sanchez “Is that temporary or is that something…” Ivan Williams “Precisely, it is temporary in regards to the investigations that will be going on. In particular, as one the points in the agreement mentioned, there will be—both the parties, the B.M.D.U. and the K.H.M.H. have agreed to fully cooperate with a commission of inquiry and have agreed to an audit with respect to the institution and so in line with the investigations and so on, he has removed himself. So it’s temporarily with respect to the investigations.” Jose Sanchez “When it comes to the commission of inquiry, have they decided which parties will be a part of that?” Ivan Williams “Well, clearly that is outside of the remit of the parties and myself. The commission of inquiry, to the best of my knowledge, is something which the prime minister has to call and so all aspects relating to that is best addressed by his office. I wouldn’t be able to comment on that.” Jose Sanchez “No go slows?” Ivan Williams “I can't—very important and I am glad you raised that question because in the M.O.U., it calls for the parties to continue to maintain a very harmonious working relationship. As a matter of fact, that is one of the very important points in respect of the chairman removing himself, that the parties will refrain from making aspersions and statements that are clearly attacking a person’s integrity in particular and pointing to allegations and so on.” “I think it was a crucial point because it was one of the main points that have been in discussion for a long period of time and so I think the chairman made a very significant move and a very magnanimous move, I might add, that to do so paves the way for the investigations to go through and clearly indicates that if there is any wrongdoing he cannot be blamed for being there and being accused for any disruption or anything with respect to any investigations that may be carried out.” Jose Sanchez “It’s hard not to notice that Dr. Francis Gary Longsworth, the K.H.M.H. C.E.O. is not here. Is there any particular reason for that?” Ivan Williams “No, he was here all day. It’s just that in the preparation of the final document, it was just a matter of tying up and all the parties knew that the points had already been agreed to. He had, I understand, he phoned in that he had something very important to do so it was just for the signing that he was absent. But he was here throughout the day.” Godwin Hulse, Senator “I was asked by the union last week really to assist them in a conclusion and so I have been meeting with them and on their behalf, met with the board under the mediation of Mr. Williams to try to work out points with a positive view to bringing a positive conclusion to this. I think the union and the board have engendered this positive attitude to resolve this issue and to ensure that the institution is returned to a high level of efficiency and I basically helped to facilitate that process.” While the commission is in wait, one particular point of interest says that a special purpose and full scope audit into the financial transactions of the hospital would be carried out. IT will focus particularly on the expenditure associated with procurement of goods and services. That can only mean an investigation into the procurement of meats and medication, the source of the current K.H.M.H. scandal. CH5 BELIZE AND MEXICO STRENGTHENS
TOURISM TIES
Belize
and Mexico continues to work to strengthen ties and diplomatic
relations in several areas. Earlier this month, tourism officials from
both countries met for the second time to discuss improvements in the
industry and areas where both countries can share their services. Last
year Mexican hoteliers and tourism officials came to Belize on a
familiarization tour and this year it was Belize’s turn to visit
Mexico. Marcelino Miranda of the Mexican Embassy explains.
Marcelino Miranda: Public Relations Director, Embassy of Mexico “Last week it was Belize’s turn to travel to Mexico and see the Mexican tourist destinations and also to promote Belize in Mexico. The aim was to promote on both destinations on both sides of the border. The tourist representatives have several meetings, they exchange their experiences about tourism industry, they strengthen their ties and they exchange information in order to promote the country to foreigners that visit Mexico so they can come to Belize and to do the same thing with tourists who come to Belize.” The visit was organized by the Belize Tourism Industry Association and the Mexican Embassy and included representatives from BTIA, the Belize Tourism Board, the Belize Hotel Association, the tour operators association and the national tour guide association.
