Ministry of Education
holds Reading Camp The Ministry of Education in
conjunction with local businesses
hosted for the second year its annual reading camp under the theme, “Reach
for
the
Stars”
and hopes to promote reading and writing. The camp started on July 25,
2011 and saw the participation of about 100 students from the various
primary schools on the island.
With the assistance of fifteen volunteer teachers and assistants, Education Officer Candy Armstrong and Odilia Jacobs took on the students for the week. Classes started at 8:30am and went through 2pm each day, with the final day being Friday July 29th. With all the kids at attention, The San Pedro Sun’s very own Mary Gonzalez gave the final reading of the week. Reading “The Raven” by Gerald McDermott to the kids, the children were all very excited to listen and share. Following the reading, certificates of appreciation were given out to volunteers, sponsors and each of the students received their own certificate of completion. Mrs. Armstrong told The San Pedro Sun that the program targeted primary school students and involved much interactive reading activities. All days, students were provided with snacks and lunch. Apart from certificates, the students received fun packets containing writing and reading materials depending on grade level. In the bags generously donated by Grand Belizean Estates, there were coloring book, exercise books, pencils and crayons. It is the hope that after the program the students will be inspired to continue their reading throughout the summer vacations and the school year. San Pedro Sun Cleaning the reef?
Louisiana Company wants to try
![]() The quality of water that runs
through the pipes isn’t the only
issue that is pressing on economies of islands like San Pedro and Caye
Caulker. The lifeline of the cayes are divided between tourism and
fishing. And as it turns out, cleaning the reef is a niche market that
is mostly unheard of in the Jewel. But two businessmen from Louisiana
hope to introduce Belize to its brand of cleanup. According to the Gulf
South Steel partners, they can perform salvage operations when ships,
yachts and other vessels are grounded on the reef.
Paul Koffler, Partner
in Gulf South Steel
“We’re looking to see what resources we have to get to to get to clean up a lot of the reef. We’re aware that Belize has the second largest barrier reef and that some ships ran aground on the reef and we want to see what we can do to extract the ships away from the reef and protect the reef from endangering the environment.” Jose Sanchez “Recently, we have had a lot of ships—one large example is the Westerhaven—I knew they had to bring in tugboats from outside of Belize to come and remove this very large vessel that destroyed a portion of our reefs. What do you think that you can bring? Is this something permanent? How much does it cost?”
Mike Easterling,
Partner in Gulf South Steel
“Well actually it’s a two prong thing that we want to do. The first thing we want to do is come in and clean up; you there are a lot of smaller ships and barges that get run aground on the reef and just get left or even in the ports—to clean that all up out of the water because it is better for the environment. And the second thing is to take out of service ships and have an ongoing business of demolishing those ships in a safe environmentally friendly way; creating jobs for people in Belize and at the same time ensuring that the environmentally friendly remediation and destruction of the ships. And also a portion of the money that we make will from the demolishing of the ships will go back to conservation of the manatees and sea turtles.”
Jose Sanchez
“Has any dialogue started with perhaps the ports, commissioner or any relevant government body?” Paul Koffler “Well we started working with BELTRAIDE about three years ago, but with the economy, it didn’t really allow us to come back in the country to where we can start this project. Well you know our economy in the states has improved a little bit better to where we can work with them and see what we can do about getting our permits and getting our equipment down here.” Jose Sanchez “How soon should we be seeing you operational? Paul Koffler “I would hope in the next couple months.” ambergriscaye.com YOUTH FOR THE FUTURE ACCEPTING NOMINATIONS
FOR YOUTH AWARDS
Youth for the Future is calling
for entries to be submitted for their
annual Youth Awards. Already, YFF has received numerous nominations
from across the country but manager of the Governance Unit at the
organization Nomar Bembridge says people still have up until tomorrow
to submit their nominations.
Nomar Bembridge – Manager, Governance Unit “The Youth Award is a Belize award actually bestowed on young people who are active in their communities, in the country in different areas. There are 15 categories what they seek to do is highlight young people who are active in these specific field and encourage other young people to become active. Our young people are doing enough that I think we should have a lot of nominations to actually highlight those positive and take a break from focusing on the negative factors in our country so hopefully we will have a lot of young people to recognize on the 12th.” Nomination forms are available at the YFF offices across the country. A committee will be working on the selection process next week and the awards ceremony is scheduled for August twelfth in Belize City. Youth who are nominated must be between the ages of fifteen and twenty-nine. For additional information interested persons can visit their nearest YFF office. LoveFM NOTICES
